Activision closes Guitar Hero dev
RIP Budcat Creations.Following news earlier today that Blur dev Bizarre Creations was facing down an uncertain future, Activision has axed another one of its acquisitions – Budcat Creations.
According to PC Gamer, staff at the Iowa City-based developer were handed their P45s this morning.
The studio was set up in 2001 by ex-EA Tiburon employees. Early titles included PSone ports of Madden NFL 2003 and Nascar Thunder 2003, franchises that it continued to work on until Activision bought it in 2008.
Since then it's been in charge of porting all Guitar Hero titles to the PlayStation 2, up to and including last year's Band Hero, as well as masterminding the Wii version of Guitar Hero: Metallica.
So, apart from re-affirming the fact that it appears to be open season on Activision subsidiaries, this news would also suggest that the publisher is finally done supporting any Guitar Hero fans still slumming it on the PlayStation 2.
