UK Top 40: UFC Undisputed 3 claims number one

But where's Tekken 3D?

THQ brawler UFC Undisputed 3 entered the UK all-format charts in first place, holding off FIFA 12 in second.

UFC3 is the first game from troubled publisher THQ to hit the top-spot since last year's Homefront, although UFC3 sold less at launch than previous entry, UFC 2010.

Tekken 3D: Prime Edition, last week's other newcomer, failed to enter the top 40 altogether. It's nowhere to be found on the 3DS specific top 10, either. The fact that retailers Game and Gamestation did not stock Tekken 3D probably didn't help.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, last week's number one, tumbled all the way into 12th place.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 was third, while Mario & Sonic: London 2012 Olympics rocketed up to fourth.

Battlefield 3 was fifth, followed respectively by Final Fantasy 13-2, Skylanders, The Darkness 2, Skyrim and Just Dance 3.

The full top 40 lies below.

    As a relatively big Tekken fan, I couldn't have told you with any accuracy when Tekken released on 3DS until I started seeing reviews for it last week. The general level of awareness of its release must have been quite low.

    Couple that with the lack of a specialist presence (due to GAME's issues), the lack of modes, and the game was probably destined to struggle. It wouldn't have helped that SSFIV3D was viewed as one of the very few really good 3DS launch games, so a large number of 3DS owners already have a fighting game for their machine, even if Tekken does outperform it on many levels.

    Tekken tends to sell through for a while though - first week sales aren't quite as important to it as they would be for some other games.

    Game and Gamestation didn't even seem to stock it, they seem struggling to stock any games from new. I got the last copy of KOA on release.

    Sad news about Tekken not even charting, I guess it was always going to be a hard sell since it offers nothing new to its core fanbase

    Buying games on release is crazy these days. Most games drop by 50% within a month, especially single player only. Skyrim was the last game I bought on release for £40. I saw it for £25 while shopping in asda 3 weeks later! Never again

    I hoped Amalur to stay in the top 10 but not even Skyward Sword stayed there for long, sadly, so I suppose it's a definitely a good result for such a new IP.
    Genuinely surprised, and happy, for The Darkness 2.
    The game is objectively short (it took me almost the same time to complete the first though) but the New Game+ is a incentive to go back an re-play it; the art style is fantastic and the quad-wield is great...local co-op would have made me play this for ages though.

    Impressive performance by Skylanders, which launched way down in the bottom of the top 40 (debut at 34th or 37th, IIRC) almost half a year ago, and now has climbed to a seemingly steady spot in the top 10, where it will probably remain for months. In the age of rapid chart tumbling, a sleeper his like this should make the industry news - maybe gamesindustry.biz is going to investigate this success story?

    Also, the Skylanders figures and addons seems to be sold out everywhere, so this must be a big success for Activision (the bastards).

    @Ironrobe
    I think those deals around christmas were an act of desperation from Game and Gamestation, they needed to get as many people in the stores as possible. Unfortunatly by doing that they have devalued the full price of games and shot themselves in the foot.

    Aren't most Tekken fans on the Sony consoles has Nintendo ever got a Tekken game before?

    As for Skylanders success doesn't equal good it's just something to sell to the kids and then force there parents into buying crappy addons.

    It's gonna be a huge week for new entries next week with the Vita being released aswell as Last Story, Syndicate (No.1), Binary Domain, Jak Trilogy all being released aswell. Hyperdimension Nepunia aswell but that'll never make the chart :)

    Completed 1st playthrough of Deus Ex: HR yesterday, and wow!, what an amazing game!
    First PT I chose the ending I fancied and it's really great, a real organic experience, nothing was left untold and every side-quest didn't even seem like a "side-quest", everything integrated so well. Awesome.
    Boss fights are shit though.

    I contributed towards Super Mario 3D Land's rise to 19 this week :p Money well spent!
  • Eoin #11 3 months ago

    @landlock Nintendo did get a Tekken game before, in the form of Tekken Advance for the Game Boy Advance, but most Tekken fans would have either ignored it or treated it purely as a curiousity. It didn't really play much like Tekken and was asking a bit too much from the GBA.

    In terms of where the Tekken fans are, though, I suspect that a reasonable amount of Tekken fans are 3DS owners - certainly enough to put a Tekken game in the top 40 on its week of release - but while they may be Tekken fans and 3DS owners, they may not be interested in owning Tekken on 3DS at the moment.

    Amalur already on 12? was also hoping at least 10..I mean ..AC Revelation is above it....who still buys that even now ?.. yea sure ok and popular franchise but still...

    I can only hope the Amalur sales worldwide will be pretty ok so we can get at least an xpack if not Amalur 2 ...the world/universe is huge and only a portion of it is shown in Reckoning.. Was hoping we would get more of that in singleplayer before the mmo reaches :(
  • gillri #13 3 months ago

    @Ironrobe

    Well noone buys games for £40 anyway, the vast majority of the time you should be able to get it for £35, and in many cases get it for £31/32

    For the past 2 years, If a game I really want I have to have day one (usually SP games) then I buy it complete it and sell it straight away, or trade it in and pay th every little extra for another game

    then if I want to play it again 6 months, a year. 2 years down the line (in many case I do like Dead Space 2 or Arkham City) theni'll buy it again and by then it'll be £15, £10 or sometimes even £5

    I would never let cost be the factor of buying or not buying a game if I really really want it day one

    I honestly think Kingdoms of Amalur has suffered due to GAME not restocking the damn thing. Went to my local branch twice last week and they still didn't restock. Of course I'm sure other shops had it in stock (as well as online stores) so I could be wrong :)

    In the case of Tekken, Hybrid released recently, SFxT is a matter of months away, and Tekken Tag Tournament 2 isn't being that inconspicuous behind the curtain (I can see your feet!)
    But the GAME Group situation, whatever the specific situation or reason in reality might be, cannot have helped this version's chances of making the all-formats.

    The actual total sales of Tekken 3DS are totally laughable. From that total, it looks like the only place you could get it where Amazon and other onliners. This is definitely due in a big way to lack of availability at GAME.

    Bear in mind that Sonic and Mario (the number one 3DS title) sold more than TEN times as many as Tekken, no doubt helped by the heavy tv advertising. S&M is a much more mass market proposition of course, but even so Tekken's performance is alarming.

    Whilst its no good for the brand when the title hasn't performed, Namco Bandai probably did quite well out of selling it to Nintendo based on expected performance, that definitely didn't materialise.

    @IOnlyUseSkill

    Amalur sales drop is about inline with what most titles have been dropping on their second week, so GAME aren't totally to blame here. That said, the good word of mouth for the title that arrived with little hype should have propped it up a bit more in week 2.

    I didn't know Uncharted 3 was on 360!
  • Machetazo #18 3 months ago

    although UFC3 sold less at launch than previous entry, UFC 2010.
    What is the cause of that? Why is the all-formats number 1, under-performing its predecessor?
    However, the chart position doesn't tell the entire story, with the third game actually selling fewer units in its debut week than the No.2 charting UFC 2010: Undisputed managed in 2010. UFC 2009 Undisputed, the first game in the series, charted at No.1 in May 2009 and sold over three times the copies achieved by UFC 3.
    Amalur's sales fell 63%, also according to Videogamer.com's analysis.

    Tesco still are not stocking Kingdoms of Amalur. I am sure that won't have helped sales.
  • TRUTH #20 3 months ago

    Kingdom of Amular was very overrated with mixed opinions - casual (Wii) crowed seem to enjoy it most...Personally thought it was an Hack n Slash myself, with a simplified Rpg mechanic - though not really useful as the game was extremely easy and did not do much other then kill everything!

    everybody's totally missed one WEIRD anomaly - Skate 3 has jumped up TEN places, ahead of Uncharted 3. is it the late 90s again?
