$499 Virtuix Omni VR treadmill shipping September

UPDATE: Shipping in July, actually.

UPDATE 4PM: Virtuix has been in touch to clarify that Omni treadmills will actually begin shipping in July. The September date is for people who pre-order one now. So, if you're an early adopter, you could be getting yours as soon as this summer. Can I come round and try it out?

ORIGINAL STORY 12.45AM: The bizarre and fascinating VR treadmill, Virtuix Omni, will now ship in September priced $499.

That price doesn't include hefty shipping fees, nor does it include an Oculus Rift VR headset or PC game controller - all those you'll have to buy separately.

What you do get is the treadmill with a sized support harness and a sized pair of special shoes, which work in tandem with the low-friction surface to digitise your walking, running or jumping.

Those who backed it on Kickstarter nearly a year ago were offered - by the looks of it - a lower buying price.

The Omni was playable at EGX London last autumn - did you have a go? Could these kind of devices mark a new era for the public arcades - equipment too expensive and cumbersome to have at home, but exciting and entertaining enough to draw visiting crowds?
