Sir Patrick Moore, astronomer, broadcaster and Games Master, dies

"He WAS the Gamesmaster. RIP Sir Patrick Moore, a true original."

Sir Patrick Moore, the astronomer, broadcaster and Games Master, died over the weekend aged 89.

He passed away peacefully at 12:25 on Sunday 9th December at his home in Selsey, West Sussex, friends and colleagues said in a statement.

Sir Patrick presented the BBC programme The Sky At Night for over 50 years, but gamers may remember him best for his star turn as the Games Master on the early '90s video game TV show.

GamesMaster, the first ever UK TV show dedicated to video games, was screened on Channel 4 from 1992 to 1998. Sir Patrick played the GamesMaster, a disembodied head that challenged gamers and doled out hints and tips.

GamesMaster presenter Dominik Diamond tweeted: “What? He also did a show about planets? I just did the puerile gags. But he WAS the Gamesmaster. RIP Sir Patrick Moore, a true original.”

In the first episode of the first season of GamesMaster, Sir Patrick Moore challenged Daniel Blake from Edgware to collect 50 coins in two minutes in the first level of world one in NES classic Super Mario Bros. 3. See how he did in the video below.
