Respawn is "investigating ways" of detecting Apex Legends players using a keyboard and mouse on console

"Our stance on this? The short answer is: we don't condone it."

Respawn has confirmed it does not condone Apex Legends players using a keyboard and mouse on consoles.

In amongst some discussion about Apex Legends competitive events and its Respawn Artist Showcase in the "7.19 Respawn Check-In" update on Reddit, the developer dropped a little reminder that if you're using a mouse and keyboard whilst playing the free-to-play battle royale on console, they "are investigating ways to detect if players are doing it that".

"Our stance on this? The short answer is: we don't condone it," said community manager, Jay Frechette. "We are investigating ways to detect if players are doing it that we're testing internally. That's all we have to say on it for now but we'll revisit this and talk about progress with detection and how we'll address players that are using it in the near future."

However, the developer stopped short of explaining why it condones the practice, nor did it expand on what might happen to players detected using K/M on console.

Respawn recently detailed how it's been dealing with its cheater problem, too. Alongside developing auto-ban technology to boot out cheaters - similar to the measures PUBG Corp recently discussed - Respawn has been increasing its resources and undertaking "ongoing work to adapt to new cheats". Best of all, though, this includes developing a matchmaking system "that matches detected cheaters and spammers together".

I've spent some time with Apex Legends' second season and - disconnections aside - I reckon season 2 is shaping up nicely. In my overview, I said: "poised almost equidistant between Fortnite and PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, Apex Legends undoubtedly hit the ground running. Yet despite blending the best aspects of each of those battle royale titans - Fortnite's humour, for instance, and PUBG's grittier tactics - Respawn has created a BR clone with a personality and class all of its own. Providing Respawn can steady the ship and curb those frustrating disconnections, Season 2 looks set to capitalise on an already impressive foundation."
