Remember Call of Duty Elite? It's shutting down this Friday

And won't be coming back.

Call of Duty Elite shuts down this Friday, 28th February, Activision has announced.

The stat tracking service worked with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 and was in the process of being phased out for the release of last year's Call of Duty: Ghosts, which used the Clan Wars system instead.

The current Call of Duty app replaces Elite, Activision said in a FAQ (via MP1st).

"There are no plans to bring Call of Duty Elite back," Activision added. "We encourage fans to download the Call of Duty app for Call of Duty: Ghosts, which allows players to customise their multiplayer character and weapons loadouts on the go, keep track of their Call of Duty: Ghosts stats, and features Call of Duty Clan Wars, where players can compete for cool, exclusive in-game gear."

Elite launched in 2011 alongside Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare 3 in free and premium flavours. Pay a subscription and you got monthly downloadable content, competitions, pro strategies and even TV content. Activision said that as of 31st March 2012 10m had signed up with 2m premium members.

However, just before the release of Treyarch's Black Ops 2 in November 2012, Activision announced Elite would go entirely free, with map packs sold separately.
