New PS2, sir?

Mmmmm, shiny.

Sony is gearing up to release a new version of the PlayStation 2 hardware next month, according to a report on GamesRadar. As well as being about 75% quieter thanks to reduced fan noise, the major changes to the system are with regards to its DVD functionality, with the ability to play DVD-R and DVD-RW discs and support for progressive scan playback. An infra-red receiver will replace the current need to purchase a separate unit to make use of a remote control.

There's no firm release date as yet, with Sony saying the intention is to release the new unit "next month" in the familiar black and a new silver shade, apparently designed to match Sony's forthcoming Silver Prestige line of home entertainment hardware. Sexy.
