Minecraft documentary due in early December
Molyneux: "It's far better than a god game or any game I've done."
Minecraft: The Story of Mojang, a documentary by 2 Player Productions - the team behind the Double Fine Adventure video series - is scheduled for a release in "early December," director Paul Owens told Eurogamer.
"December 7th is the aim," he noted, but clarified the studio "hasn't quite settled on the exact date." Regardless of the specific day, it will be available on DVD and as a digital release around then.
The documentary started as a Kickstarter project last February where it received $210,297 out of a $150,000 goal.
The Minecraft movie follows creator Markus "Notch" Persson for about a year in 2011 after his shockingly fast rise to fame and fortune.
I saw a near final cut of the film over the weekend and it's a fascinating look at the medium's biggest indie success story. It examines the ins and outs of building a company as well as captures the Minecraft zeitgeist by interviewing dedicated fans, young children who are taught Minecraft in school, and notable industry figures like Tim Schafer, Peter Molyneux, Chris Hecker, and Penny Arcade's Mike Krahulik and Jerry Holkins.
At one point Molyneux even admits "It's far better than a god game or any game I've done. For sure... It's a fact!"
Another highlight is a little girl who claims the only thing she doesn't like about Minecraft is "listening to everyone talk about it all the time." Bless her!
