Hollywood's Sam Raimi not directing World of Warcraft movie any longer

Project has a new, unknown helmsman, apparently.

Sam Raimi, director of the recent Spider-Man film trilogy, will no longer call the shots on the World of Warcraft movie.

We heard back in October 2010 that the WOW flick had stalled because Raimi started work directing the new Wizard of Oz movie, Oz: The Great and Powerful.

Apparently, time constraints meant "they" - presumably film studio Legendary Pictures - couldn't sit around and wait for Raimi, and so had to draft a new, as yet unknown, director in instead.

The film should drip with atmosphere and menace.

"Actually, they don't have me directing World of Warcraft [film] any more, because when I took the Oz job, they had to move on to another director," Raimi told CraveOnline at Comic-Con.

"They had to start making it."

Raimi had been working on a standalone story that would take place within the World of Warcraft universe.

God knows what will happen now.

A World of Warcraft movie was announced back in 2006, when sky was the limit for Blizzard's MMO. That was six years ago. Whether Blizzard has the same vigour for such a project now remains to be seen.

Not too late for Pandas!
