PES 2012

PES 2012

Please jink responsibly.

It used to be simple. Pro Evolution Soccer was the hardcore football simulation - a world of skill pentagons, nil-nil draws and anoraks for goalposts, with Pierluigi Collina's demonic face beaming at you on the cover - and FIFA was the flashy, three-minute pop-song vision of football, full of perfect, arcing screamers and Robbie Williams menu music.

So EA Sports began plotting, and spent the years between 2007 and 2011 rebuilding FIFA as real football. The result is the wonderful FIFA 12 - tough, physical and precise, with a new defending system that bullies you into marking space rather than haring impatiently out of position every time you lose the ball.

But while FIFA grew up into a simulation, Konami lapsed into turgid and directionless iteration, and before we knew it PES had gone senile - a once-beautiful game tweaked and twisted beyond its capacity for improvement.

Two PES 2012 demos announced

First out this Wednesday.

Two demos of PES 2012 for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 are planned for release, Konami has announced.

The first goes live on Wednesday, and is based on a preview build of the game. Six teams are included: Manchester United, AC Milan, FC Porto, Napoli, Santos and Panarol. 10 minute matches and Challenge Training mode, in which you can practice the new control systems, are available.

Because the first PES 2012 demo "will not be truly representative of the final game," Konami will release a second demo "reflecting the final version's feel and gameplay" in mid-September.

FeaturePES 2012

Form is temporary, class is permanent.

Once upon a time, before EA Sports hired the Top Men who masterminded FIFA's revival in the late 2000s, our football-gaming lives were all about Pro Evolution Soccer, and the arrival of each new instalment was the equivalent of what cracking the seal on the tomb of Tutankhamen would have been to archaeologists - except we got to do it annually. Twice annually, if we had chipped PS2s and imported versions of Japanese sister-series Winning Eleven, which of course we did.
