Fallout 4 and Skyrim PS4 mods look dead - and Bethesda blames Sony

"Like you, we are disappointed by Sony's decision..."

It doesn't look like the PlayStation 4 versions of Fallout 4 and Skyrim Special Edition will get mod support - and Bethesda has blamed Sony.

In an update on, the company said Sony had blocked mods for the role-playing games "the way they should work".

Fallout 4 on Xbox One has had mod support since May.

"After months of discussion with Sony, we regret to say that while we have long been ready to offer mod support on PS4, Sony has informed us they will not approve user mods the way they should work: where users can do anything they want for either Fallout 4 or Skyrim Special Edition."

It's a worrying development for PS4 owners who had been told to expect mod support for Fallout 4 months ago.

Fallout 4 mod support, which launched on Xbox One back in May, was delayed on PS4 back in June. At the time, Bethesda revealed some of the problems associated with getting Fallout 4 mods working with Sony's console.

First off, PC textures are used, which means memory and performance issues may occur. Secondly, sound files are currently not supported because the PS4 sound format is a proprietary format. And thirdly - and perhaps most concerning - the PS4 mod storage limit is around 900MB, compared with 2GB on Xbox One at launch. Bethesda said it was working with Sony to increase this limit, but it looks like those negotiations broke down.

"Like you, we are disappointed by Sony's decision given the considerable time and effort we have put into this project, and the amount of time our fans have waited for mod support to arrive," Bethesda continued.

"We consider this an important initiative and we hope to find other ways user mods can be available for our PlayStation audience. However, until Sony will allow us to offer proper mod support for PS4, that content for Fallout 4 and Skyrim on PlayStation 4 will not be available.

"We will provide an update if and when this situation changes."

Sony has yet to comment on the matter, but that hasn't stopped Microsoft from making the most of the news.
