Promising Kickstarted game The Banner Saga is now due some time "mid-year" 2013, developer Stoic has announced. It once carried a rough November 2012 date that evidently didn't come to pass.

You won't have to wait that long to play The Banner Saga though, as it's in paid open beta now. Well a version of the game is: a standalone multiplayer portion subtitled Factions.

The Banner Saga date was shared at the bottom of a long and detailed Kickstarter update post (via VG247) about the progress of the project and its goals. Everything from travel to events, to conversation to story, and to writing, combat and art production was discussed.

The Banner Saga is a Viking-themed cartoon-styled turn-based and story-driven strategy RPG. You must lead your clan of Vikings to glory.

It takes inspirations from the likes of King of Dragon Pass, Shining Force and Final Fantasy Tactics, and is billed as "a mature game aimed at gamers who appreciate art, story and strategy".

It's made by the three-man Stoic team, all of whom are veterans of the Star Wars: The Old Republic BioWare team. Their various backgrounds also involve working for DC Comics and NASA.
