Modern Warfare 3 sells 8.9m in debut US month - report

Less than 100,000 of those were on Wii.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 sold 8.9 million copies in the US during its first month on sale, according to analyst firm Cowen & Company.

As reported by Gamasutra, that's nearly 10 per cent more than the eight million Black Ops managed in its first month on sale last year.

Modern Warfare 3's tally apparently only included 100,000 copies of the Wii version. Even fewer customers bought the Windows version, though the NPD data cited doesn't take into account Steam purchases.

The game accounted for around 23 per cent of all software sales for the month.

To put those sales into perspective, 1.26 million copies of Assassin's Creed: Revelations were snapped up, 700,000 copies of Uncharted 3 and 50,000 copies of Rayman Origins. See Eurogamer's full NPD report for more.

Earlier today publisher Activision announced that the game had earned a billion dollars worldwide in just 16 days.
