Dragon Quest X nearly done, still Wii-only

Full reveal due soon.

We've heard precious little news regarding Dragon Quest X since it was first announced as a Wii exclusive back in 2008. However, according to a new interview with series lynchpin Yuji Horii, the game is nearly finished and a reveal is imminent.

"All we can say is that development is going well and we're on the last parts of the game," Horii told Nintendo Power magazine, as reported by GoNintendo.

"We can't really share much else at this point, but by the end of this year we should be able to announce something regarding it."

Horii confirmed that the game was still being developed for the Wii and hinted that fans of Dragon Quest VIII, which released on PlayStation 2 in 2004, should be happy with the direction the game is taking.

"I feel that some users will want to play Dragon Quest on the big screen, which is why we are working toward releasing it on Wii. Of course, in the future we might develop on handhelds again, so it's really a case-by-case basis. It all depends on what the customer wants at that time.

"Something else we hear is that players want a new Dragon Quest that follows the same system of Dragon Quest VIII, so that's something else we're taking into consideration while in development for a Dragon Quest on Wii."

The last game in Square-Enix's phenomenally successful RPG series, Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies, hit the DS last year.

Eurogamer awarded it 9/10, landing it a spot in our game of the year rundown.

    I approve.

Keep field encounters pls! Random encounters seem archaic in most games now

(for some reason I have no problem with it in SMT games)

I enjoyed Dragon Quest 9 so much that I'll probably play the next one wherever they release it. Hadn't played any of them before that.

Dragon Quest IX was my first and so far only Dragon Quest and I quite enjoyed it although I couldn't bring myself to finishing it because it got very repetitive. Still looking forward to a new one, especially because most RPGs I play are on the GBA or the DS so it will be nice to have see one on the big screen again. This and the finally announced Xenoblade should make a nice addition in my home console collection.

So now that Xenoblade is coming, how long will this one take to come to Europe?

Thank Christ - DQIX is good but the lack of character based story makes VIII the much, much better game, so hopefully this is a step forward from that, rather than the step back IX proved to be.

Can they please release this on PS3/360/NGP instead, anything that is capable of outputting HD graphics?...

"Can they please release this on PS3/360/NGP instead, anything that is capable of outputting HD graphics?..."

No, they won't. It seems to me that Japanese gamers, generally, don't give a flying fuck about HD graphics. Or rather, that consideration comes a distant second (or third, or fourth) to being able to play the latest iteration of a massively popular series like Dragon Quest.

So if they released this on, say, the Dreamcast, you could watch in awe as DC sales go through the damn roof. The same will happen with this. So Ninty would be nuts to let them transfer it over to other platforms, particularly at this stage.

Bollocks. Just sold my Wii after 3 years without a single decent game on it and now the one good game is not going multiplat.

Just release it for a decent console god damn it! At least port it to the 3DS, the graphics are the same if you want to keep it nintendo only.

I'm suprised they're still doing it for the Wii.

The console's dying, especially in Japan where it's moved down to fourth place. RPGs on the console are flopping in every region (even Monster Hunter only just broke 1million copies on the Wii, 1/4 of what it sells on the PSP).

There's what, 1 AAA game for the Wii on release schedules other than this?

This will be a day one buyer for me.
I love the latest one of DS, despite me getting to level 23 solo before I realised I could recruit a whole team.
The I had to go back to the start and grind them up levels...still only got them all to level 15 so far.
    Really a great game.
If only they'd release more Jrpgs on the big format consoles.

Excellent news. DQVIII on the PS2 was one my favourite games last gen, and this will finally give me a reason to use my Wii again.

This is excellent news, these guys can do no wrong in my eyes. They did an excellent job moving the series to handeld and now moving it to a console which is a step above what the PS2 could do is great news. Especially when they are going back to the direction Dragon Quest VIII took, which is one of the best JRPGs made.

Though I think it's obvious Dragon Quest XI will be appearing on the 3DS.

    @ryndsimmons

Not a single decent release in the past 3 years? - Don't exaggerate. Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Donkey Kong Country Returns came out last year. Even if you don't like those type of games, you can hardly say they're not decent games - they're just not to your taste. I could come up with more examples of decent games but I shouldn't waste any more time than I already have against such a ridiculous statement.

"Bollocks. Just sold my Wii after 3 years without a single decent game on it... ".

Whenever someone comes out with a comment like this about the Wii I look over my copies of Rune Factory Frontier, Sakura Wars, Punch Out, Mario Galaxy 2, No More Heroes 2, Monster Hunter Tri and Sin and Punishment and think "Am I the only one who bought these?"

Nintendo are supposed to be publishing this in the West. Any dreams of it appearing on a non-Nintendo console are futile.
  • wanderingkid #17 1 year ago

    Yey !
Online co-op and items/character trading on Wii will be awesome for this. But also I do hope it has an interesting strong storyline !

Watch it leap back into the top spot when DQX is released - Dragon Quest has that power in Japan.
