Valve is making a free-to-play game, according to a new report.

Valve marketing boss Doug Lombardi replied "yes" when French game website Barre De Vie asked him whether the Portal 2 maker planned to create a micro-transaction game.

Valve's digital distribution model Steam last week announced the support of in-game transactions, setting the service up for F2P games.

One of the first is Global Agenda, a massively multiplayer RPG. Another is superhero MMO Champions Online.

So, what is Valve's micro-transaction game? Could it be DOTA 2, the sequel to the Warcraft III mod Defense of the Ancients?

Valve will be at German game show gamescom in August. Will it announce a F2P DOTA 2 there?
