Telltale premieres multiplayer Crowd Play feature in Batman

Words with super friends.

Telltale Games' upcoming Batman series will premiere an all new multiplayer function in which groups of players can vote on choices.

Inevitably the choice will be given whether to smooch Catwoman. They do make a great couple. But at what cost?

As reported by Inverse, the developer announced this new feature at San Diego Comic-Con over the weekend. Here's how it works:

Upon selecting Crowd Play, the host is given a URL. Their friends can then go to that URL and login, adding them to the game. It's all very Fibbage.

Crowd Play then offers two modes. In one mode the host has complete control over decisions, but they're able to see what percentage of spectators choose which options. Viewers are also allowed to leave thumbs up or thumbs down reactions to the host's decisions.

Another mode actually lets the spectators vote on what they'd like to see and the majority ruling goes into play.

"“A lot of us grew up playing with friends or family members crowded around one screen, going through the story and talking to the characters, with [everyone] pointing at certain objects or where to click or deciding what to say,” Telltale head of creative communications Job Stauffer told Inverse. “It's just something that we've kind always just done for fun.”

According to Shack News, the Crowd Play mode will support upwards of 2000 players.

Unfortunately, there are some latency issues that prevent Crowd Play from being streamed; a shame as this seems like its most useful implementation. Telltale plans to implement Crowd Play into future titles, so hopefully these technical foibles will be ironed out over time.

As is, the feature would still work well for smaller gatherings or live events, such as when Telltale hosted an informal crowdplay of Tales From the Borderlands, which I thought was a hoot.

Telltale's Batman series begins 2nd August on PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PC, Mac, iOS and Android.
