Giz covers Ireland

Emerald Isle inhabitants will soon get their hands on everyone's favourite handheld that isn't made by Sony or Nintendo.

Tiger Telematics has announced plans to launch the Gizmondo in Ireland on April 19.

The handheld went on sale in the UK on March 19, with Tiger promising that European and US launches would swiftly follow. Ireland will receive a shipment of 30,000 units to be distributed by Sigma Wireless, and there will be an extensive TV and outdoor marketing campaign.

The Gizmondo has been regarded as something of an underdog in the battle of the handhelds, trailing behind the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP before the latter even has a release date. However, Tiger is hoping that the Gizmondo's unique features, such as a built-in camera, multimedia messaging and a GPS chip will make it a front runner.

So far, Tiger has yet to announce whether there will be a party to celebrate the Gizmondo's Irish launch. But judging by the fact that Sting, Jamiroquai and Busta Rhymes performed at the London event, we predict appearances by Dana, B*Witched and Michael Flatley.
