Microsoft says it's ahead of PS3 in Europe

Gosen claims "well over" 5 million units sold.

Microsoft's David Gosen says the console has sold well over 5 million units in European territories.

Gosen, who is European VP of strategic marketing for interactive entertainment at MS EMEA, also hurled abuse at Sony from behind his presumably gigantic new business card.

"Our installed base in Europe is well over five million and contrary to what's been reported we are at least, if not more than, three quarters of a million ahead of PS3," he told MCV.

'What's been reported' is Sony Europe boss David Reeves' claim in May that his gang has "sold more PlayStation 3s throughout Europe than Xbox 360".

Perhaps it's a question of how you define "Europe" then, as Gosen's EMEA credential would also cover the Middle-East and Africa. In theory, PAL regions would also include Australia. Microsoft wasn't around when we called this morning to try and clarify Gosen's comments.
