Infinity Ward pulls trios from Call of Duty: Warzone again

UPDATE: It's coming back!

UPDATE 16th April 2020: And, just like that, trios is coming back to Warzone.

"We hear you loud and clear!" developer Infinity Ward said in a tweet. A playlist update is set for Warzone 7am UK time on Friday 17th April that brings trios mode back to battle royale.

It comes after yet another backlash at the removal of trios mode earlier this week. Infinity Ward has pulled and reinstated trios twice now since the launch of season three last week - much to the annoyance of players.

Perhaps trios will stick around for longer this time?

ORIGINAL STORY 15th April 2020: Infinity Ward has tinkered once again with the playlists and modes for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone - much to the annoyance of players.

The developer faced a backlash last week when it pulled trios mode from battle royale Warzone as it added a quads mode. Just a few days later, amid growing discontent from Warzone's playerbase, Infinity Ward put trios back into Warzone.

But trios is once again gone after Infinity Ward pushed an update to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare yesterday. Replacing regular trios is a new trios mode called Scopes and Scatter Guns, which features snipers and shotguns only.

It's fair to say the reaction to the removal of regular trios is overwhelmingly negative, with social media and Call of Duty's various subreddits packed with posts from players left scratching their heads by Infinity Ward's tinkering.

Warzone currently has solos, Scopes and Scatter Guns and quads modes. Most in the community are calling on Infinity Ward to settle on a selection of modes that always includes solos, duos, trios and quads.

Meanwhile, on the competitive multiplayer side of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Infinity Ward has pushed and pulled with its playlists once again, replacing Deathmatch Domination mode with Drop Zone mode (the only way to earn Killstreaks is by holding the objective and you earn additional points for each player inside the drop zone), and adding the Stir Crazy playlist. Stir Crazy is a 10v10 playlist with Cranked, Kill Confirmed, Domination, and Hardpoint. It's pretty chaotic.

But there's still no small maps playlist, which many fans, like me, are after (Shipment 24/7 is a very popular request). As I wrote over the weekend, I wish Call of Duty: Modern Warfare let me play the maps I want when I want.

It feels like Infinity Ward and Warzone co-developer Raven Software are still trying to work out what's best for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare's battle royale, which is understandable given it's relatively new to the scene. And it very much looks like a duos mode, which many are calling for, is in the works. But players are understandably frustrated by the constant tinkering, especially when modes disappear from the game entirely without explanation.

Infinity Ward recently announced Warzone has over 50 million players, and with crossplay enabled, you'd imagine there are enough players to fill the game's various modes. I get the impression Modern Warfare's multiplayer is pretty popular, too, so you'd like to think a close-quarters-focused playlist wouldn't cause long matchmaking times in other modes, if it were available.

Until the next update...
