iGoogle gaming gadgets showing at GDC

Google gets a bit gamey next week.

Google has invited journalists to an event during GDC to showcase its "new collection of gaming themes for iGoogle", the customised homepage.

"We will be creating an interactive experience that will bring the gaming industry's most iconic characters to life and allow you to ride through their adventures," the invite for the 25th March event reads, courtesy of Kotaku.

Game gadgets built for iGoogle using OpenSocial will be showcased, and a few of the publishers whose characters are involved will step up for a chinwag. VentureBeat speculates that the gadgets may be the real headline-maker.

It's not Google's first dip into games, of course - last year the company launched and binned a virtual world called Lively in the space of a few months.

The company also owns in-game advertising firm Adscape Media.

Still, even if all this turns out to be is a chance to have Rayman bouncing around your BBC News ticker whenever you fire up your browser, we'd take that.
