Tony Coles on the brilliance of Bizarre's Project Gotham Racing finale.

It's raining. You're racing through a capital city at 120 miles per hour. You're in a Maserati 250F, a car that made legends of Stirling Moss and Juan Manuel Fangio (who in a single race, broke the Nurburgring lap record 10 times with one). You're powersliding like a bastard, and it's brilliant. You can only be playing Project Gotham Racing 4, a game that sings with its adroit refinement and howls with its exhaust notes. PGR2 may have made the legend and 3 took it into a new generation, but PGR4 cemented its reputation forever.

Everyone likes cars. Even the greens have got their favourites, made of regenerative braking systems, Atkinson cycle engines, old yoghurt pots and bits of rhubarb. And it seems that videogames about cars are just as susceptible to a bit of the old premium downloadable content as anything. Not at all surprised by this, we decided to take a spin round some of it so you don't get run over by poor value. Rev your feeble metaphors and join us.

Cars, bikes, modes, Achievements.

Bizarre Creations has unveiled upcoming downloadable content for Project Gotham Racing 4, set to launch on 14th February.

FeatureXbox 360: 12 Games of Christmas

Play these with mince wine.

It is now dark when we walk home and birds are either dropping out of trees in frozen lumps or going somewhere much nicer for their holidays. And, as always happens, the shops are hoisting their Christmas decorations up and getting us all worried about buying presents because we never know what they want is it socks or aftershave. So, we thought we would join in.

There's just nine days to go until Project Gotham Racing 4 emerges from the garage of Eurogamer's favourite Scousers, Bizarre Creations. In case you missed it, the Xbox 360-exclusive racer just scored a mighty 9 out of 10 in Tom's review. And to celebrate, Eurogamer TV is showcasing direct-feed footage of Mr. Bramwell's crazy skills in action.

Project Gotham Racing 4

Project Gotham Racing 4

Finesse the fight.

Appropriately enough for a game that introduces motorbikes, PGR4 restores balance to a series that was beginning to wobble. PGR3 wasn't sure whether to be a fast racer or a game of technical driving. With PGR4, Bizarre Creations was sure it could do both, and so it proves.

Key to achieving that are several things. Tweaks to the Kudos system, which rewards and encourages stylish driving, work in tandem with revisions to the handling model, while new ideas about track design (bundled together under the awkward "Racification" banner) subtly promote good driving practices without shoving them through the windscreen.

The influence of these elements is felt throughout. Arcade mode, the new home of PGR's traditional hunt for top-scoring medals, is less esoteric. Cone Sprints - tasks that involve navigating a regular track strewn with cone gates as quickly as possible - are able to emphasise the importance of speed despite their supremely technical requirements, with no loss of appeal. The two concepts, once conflicting, are now snugly entwined.

FeatureA Bizarre chat

Gareth Wilson on making PGR4. And, yes, motorbikes.

Since this interview was conducted, Bizarre Creations has been acquired by Activision.

PGR to continue - Microsoft

Bizarre buyout aftermath.

With Bizarre Creations now part of Activision, attention has turned to the developer's existing titles and whether they have a future.

Last time we saw PGR4, we had to sit across the room from it while two of the developers did endos and talked about puddles. What we actually wanted to do was drag them out by the hair, lock ourselves in and then try and get ALL PLATINUMS for as long as it took Kevin Spacey to convince us to open the door again. So this time we did just that. Close enough, anyway.

Bizarre Creations has very kindly told us what to expect from the Project Gotham Racing 4 Xbox Live demo - just as soon as it comes out of certification and lands on your Internet face.

The demo will consists of five vehicles (made up of cars and bikes), with a demo-only Arcade mode chapter set in Macau. This will consist of new challenges that have been custom-built for the demo.

Not content with that, they are throwing in a Nurburgring Snow Time Challenge - so you'll be able to see just how pretty the track (rebuilt for PGR4) looks when it's blanketed in snow. The snowy Time Attack also includes full leaderboard support.

One for the vets.

Bizarre Creations has scribbled on its Project Gotham Racing 4 website with new information about sparkly Arcade Mode.

The races here will be spread over different chapters, with each focused on a specific driving skill. So there's Catch Me If You Can, built around competitive toe-to-toe racing, or Drift 101, where cornering and Kudos point earning will be your bread and butter.

Joining these will be eight others: Final Countdown, Two Wheels Only, Horses for Courses, Rough Riders, Flatout, Steamroller World Tour, Trackday Specials and Ultimate Challenge.

Bizarre defends city recycling

PGR4's versions quite different.

Bizarre Creations has defended the decision to include several of the cities and tracks that featured in Project Gotham Racing 3 in the upcoming sequel, arguing that new weather conditions, cars and game modes justify their inclusion.

Feature360: 2007's Most Wanted

What will you be getting for Christmas?

A Most Wanted list you say? Cripes, whatever next: a Tips and Cheats pamphlet to go with Eurogamer's promotional Pacman Beach Ball cover mount? Still, it's the summer, there are precious few games around and, with an awful lot of new titles coming up towards the end of the year you might quite reasonably want to know which ones to keep an eye on.

Microsoft is quoting a September date for Project Gotham Racing 4, but it sounds like they'll have a fight on their hands if Bizarre Creations wants more time, with business director Brian Woodhouse telling Eurogamer: "This one, we're not letting go 'til it's done."

Project Gotham Racing 4

Try the rain. It's really good.

Right, does anyone remember where we got to with "the promise of the next generation"? I recall J Allard wearing a hoodie under a suit jacket to tell us about high definition graphics, largely because my Mum was round when I watched the video and said "what a trussed-up yobbo" (harsh). So there was definitely some promising of the next generation there. Then it was having 1000 units on-screen, because that's all anyone was talking about for most of 2005. And then, more recently, Ubisoft refined that to "crowd gameplay", which doesn't really mean anything, although we tried not to point that out in case Jade Raymond got offended and refused to marry us. And meanwhile, over in sunny Liverpool, Bizarre Creations have come up with a quintessentially British alternative. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the promise of the next generation: puddles.

If you click yes, it's all there.

Halo 3's Saved Film feature received glowing reports at E3 last week, but just you wait for Bizarre Creations' PGR On Demand service - a database with the potential to store every race ever played out in PGR4.

Autumn-bound PGR4 details

Autumn-bound PGR4 details

Cars, Kudos and more.

Microsoft and Bizarre Creations have detailed some of the features making up Project Gotham Racing 4 on Xbox 360, due out this autumn.

The revelations confirm some of what we already knew - PGR4 boasts a dynamic weather system where sudden changes affect your grip on the track; there are 12 cities including Shanghai and St. Petersburg; and the new career mode will see you build up a following of spectators who react to your driving.

AI will be improved enough to perform bold overtaking manoeuvres too, while Bizarre is also working on revisions to the Kudos system, which governs how many points you earn from driving manoeuvres and has been one of the series' biggest attractions.

PGR4 details race into view

Just add personality.

Bizarre Creations believes that Project Gotham Racing 4 is the first game in the series that it's really been able to focus on, not having to hurriedly complete it to release with a new console or service.

It was speaking in an exclusive feature with a Polish magazine, in which the developer talked about what this new PGR outing has to offer.

This time around you'll have more options when creating your driver, which will form the basis of a revamped Career Mode. Your opposing drivers will also now be more charismatic, identifiable by their racing styles and "personalities". There'll also be more spectators who will react better to what's going on around them, and might even wave a national flag or two.

PGR4 concept contest winner

See a car set to appear in-game.

Peugeot's competition to design a car for Project Gotham Racing 4 has already done a lot for the game. Inadvertently announcing it in the first place, for example. And now it has a winner, we can all marvel at a car you'll actually be able to drive when the game launches.

PGR4 properly unveiled

I.e. not by Peugeot this time.

And I'm surprised it took me this long to get to this one (well, you know, the corkscrew was being difficult), but: Project Gotham Racing 4 has been officially unveiled for Xbox 360.

PGR4 in 2007 or 2008?

Peugeot, oddly, spills beans.

Microsoft's planning to release Project Gotham Racing 4 on Xbox 360 towards the end of 2007 or in the first half of 2008.
