After five years in the making, the final version of Guerrilla Games' epic title is finally being enjoyed by gamers - and analysed by rival game developers anxious to see its state-of-the-art engine.
Only one way to find out.

Accompanied by Rico, you head towards the mobile factory, taking out heavy numbers of troops and sentries.
You and Rico head through the scrapyard to meet up with the rest of the unit at the elevator.
You ride down a mountain in control of a vehicle with guns and homing missiles, shoot or avoid things in your way.
You and Rico go to join up with the captain and the rest of the prisoners as you go outside and battle a few troops and a flying sentry.
You, Rico and the captain have to escape, killing the heavy resistance you face as you go from room to room.
Exit the cable car and head to the assignment you have been given.

Getting used to the controls.
The death of Visari at the end of Killzone 2 has left the Helghast legions in a state of internal confusion, but in this third game in Guerrilla's first-person shooter series, the one thing they all seem to agree on is that they should direct their efforts to wipe out the pesky ISA troopers still loitering on their rock. I.e. you.

All this virtual violence has been a huge help to developer Guerrilla Games, Sony insisted, highlighting a number of problems that to be addressed.
A Move-friendly on-rails version of Killzone 2 very nearly came into being, developer Guerrilla Games has revealed.
Helghast hath no fury.
The two Killzone 2 maps that make up the Killzone 3 Retro Map Pack have been named. They are Salamun Market and Blood Gracht.
As the saturation point looms, the first-person shooter pie has been sliced increasingly thin in recent years. The difference between some games is only a few crumbs wide and players have become connoisseurs almost by default, able to discern the subtle shift in flavours between games that, to the untrained eye, are practically identical. We've become fussy gourmands, favouring a Call of Duty or a Medal of Honor based on tiny changes to the recipe.
All of which makes the games that serve up a distinctive taste even more polarising. Killzone 2 was one such dish. I loved its streamlined and ruthless construction, which dipped you into one long, aching push into the Helghan capital to confront and capture Emperor Visari. Where other games hopped between locations and storylines like a hyperactive child, Killzone 2 was all about life as a foot soldier in a crappy situation. The scenery rarely changed, the weapon set remained largely the same and the enemies varied little.
Despite its sci-fi trappings, it felt like a real military campaign where your goal was never more lofty than simply reaching the next objective, traversing a fortified bridge or circumnavigating enemy artillery. Movement was heavy for the genre, as if you were weighed down by the alien atmosphere. It felt muscular and foreboding, a conflict where traditional gung-ho videogame heroics were a quick way to get killed.
The multiplayer Killzone 3 demo will launch at 11am tomorrow morning UK time, Sony has announced.

When all's Sev and done.
When it comes to enemies in shooter sequels bigger isn't always better, but it's usually the answer everyone offers. Halo went for the Scarab, Gears gave us a giant worm – even Call of Duty had a Soviet rocket. So to discover Killzone 3 has a massive four-legged robot pocked with artillery and shouldering a huge laser cannon is no surprise – and you'll be amazed to learn it's up to you to step into the Hoxton fin of Sgt. Tomas Sevchenko, and sort it out before it destroys what remains of your ISA invasion force.
Killzone 3 split-screen co-op was sighted last week - now it's confirmed.
In an interview with 1UP, Guerrilla's game leader Herman Hulst picked out the two-player mode while waffling on about 3D.
"We found a lot of power after we completed Killzone 2," Guerrilla's Hulst said, beating his chest. "Just to give you an example on the graphics side: we pulled a level from Killzone 2 into the Killzone 3 engine and it ran at 50 per cent. That's how much power we've been able to find.

Guerrilla Games says that Killzone 3's control system has been substantially improved over its predecessor's. Last week's limited release of the Killzone 3 multiplayer beta was a golden opportunity to put these claims to the test, and forms a small part of an extensive tech analysis set to be posted on the Digital Foundry blog tomorrow.
Almost two years on from release, Killzone 2 remains one of the most technologically advanced shooters available on console. According to Guerrilla Games, the game runs using just 60 per cent of the PlayStation 3's SPU satellite processors. Factoring in this "leftover" power, combined with lessons learned in developing Killlzone 2, hopes are high that the sequel will prove to be a significant advance over its predecessor in terms of both tech and gameplay.
Regardless of how bad the current home ownership crisis becomes, please don't buy property on Helghan. The homeworld of humanity's bitter and amber-eyed enemy is toxic, cramped and filled with brutal conflict.
Guerrilla Games brings a nimble artistry to proceedings but once again, it's in order to depict the most horrible place imaginable - a bit like asking Renoir to travel the country doing oil paintings of Little Chefs. Bilious yellow smoke, flickering ash, blood on the snow (it's possible I'm still discussing Little Chef at this point): Killzone 3 is the most beautiful ugly game I've ever played.
It's good, too. A chance to get stuck into the current multiplayer beta suggests a game that's sturdy and surprisingly moreish for an experience that takes place, pretty much exclusively, in a series of ruined industrial hell-holes.
Killzone 3 is set to get the mother of all special editions, publisher Sony has revealed.
Direct-feed from the game.
The Collector's Edition of upcoming PlayStation 3-exclusive shooter Killzone 3 includes Helghast goggles.
Every year at the Eurogamer Expo we invite you to tell us what you thought of the games you played, and without fail every year (so far anyway) you exhibit amazing taste in huge numbers. This year's Expo line-up was our strongest and most diverse yet, so we were excited to see what would follow in the footsteps of last year's winner, God of War III, or 2008's Mirror's Edge...

Unlike all the others, this Eurogamer Expo Session interview was not conducted before the corresponding developer session at Eurogamer Expo 2010. This is because Killzone 3 producer Steven Ter Heide is a busy man (he's probably on a plane somewhere fancy right now, being busy).

If Guerrilla Games' Dan Nanni had emerged triumphantly singing Roy Orbison's "You Got It" no one would have blamed him for the transgression. His Killzone 3 showing at gamescom this week is the kind of steely-eyed presentation jubilant politicians make in the run up to an election where they promise you the world and you dearly want to believe them.
That's Sev players at once.
