Games Convention 2009 scrapped

Cologne's GAMESCom takes limelight.

Leipziger Messe has announced that the 2009 Leipzig Games Convention has been cancelled.

The key consumer event for Europe will now be GAMESCom, which takes place in Cologne from 19th - 23rd August.

Developers and publishers teamed up with Koelnmesse last February to begin organising the event, favouring a more accessible city with better accommodation and resources than Leipzig. Among the companies adding their support were Nintendo, Sony and SEGA.

"In view of the new situation in terms of competition on the German trade fair market, Leipziger Messe would be dropping the GC - Games Convention from the 2009 calendar," said Leipziger Messe in a statement.

"If the industry is again in search of a platform for console and PC games and hardware with the know-how of the GC - Games Convention, we will immediately be available," added boss Wolfgang Marzin.

The Leipzig Games Convention started back in 2002 and has grown to become the biggest European trade and consumer games show on the calendar.

In its place will be Games Convention Online, an event aimed at the browser gaming market. This takes place between 31st July and 2nd August.
