Dragon Quest 8 out on iPad, iPhone and Android devices today

For £14.

Superb Japanese role-playing game Dragon Quest 8 launches on iPad, iPhone and Android devices today, Square Enix has announced.

Dragon Quest 8: Journey of the Cursed King, the most successful game in the series, costs £13.99 / €17.99 from the App Store and Google Play.

Square Enix sressed you'll be able to play the entire game without the need for additional in-game purchases.

Dragon Quest 8 launched on the PS2 in Europe eight years ago and became a critical and commercial hit. This port features new controls designed for single-handed play on touch devices. There's also an Auto run button for easy navigation around the game field.

The combat system has been reworked to allow one-tap turn-based battles. You can choose an in-game battle strategy to move your character and parties automatically during battles.

"The game is perfectly suited as a tremendous value for mobile and tablet as a full 60-plus hour console game with an epic tale of friendship, bravery and adventure," producer Noriyoshi Fujimoto said.

"In particular, we have put a lot of effort and ingenuity into making the control scheme comfortable to play with."

Square Enix recommends you use an iPhone 5 or iPad 3rd gen or later. It won't work on iPhone 4. On Android you'll need a device operating Android 4.0 or later.
