Skullgirls dev launches Indiegogo campaign for action-RPG Indivisible

Skullgirls developer Lab Zero Games and publisher 505 Games have teamed up to launched an Indiegogo campaign for a new action-RPG entitled Indivisible.

The developer cited its inspirations as Valkyrie Profile and Super Metroid, though its vibrant, cheery art style looks reminiscent of Skullgirls.

Indivisible follows the story of a woman named Anja who discovers she has the ability to absorb the powers of others. It's a pretty nifty ability to have as her hometown is being invaded by local warlords.

Aesthetically, the game is influenced by all manner of cultures with architecture and clothing running the gamut from Southeast Asia, to Greece, to Egypt and more.

While the game's exploration looks like a non-linear side-scrolling "metroidvania" affair, the combat system takes more after Valkyrie Profile wherein you control four characters at once using different face buttons. Unlike Valkyrie Profile, Indivisible won't be turn-based. You'll have to maneuver your party in real-time, though their abilities will be tethered to cooldown meters, so it's not a straight up hack-and-slash.

Lab Zero is targeting a 20-30 hour campaign without sidequests. "The priority here is on solid and fun content, not simply filling time to hit a number," the developer stated, citing Chrono Trigger and Valkyrie Profile as examples. "These shorter RPGs are also more eminently replayable, and we'd like to expand on that if we successfully fund the core game."

Secret of Mana composer Hiroki Kikuta is also on board to compose the soundtrack for Indivisible.

Lab Zero has estimated that Indivisible will cost roughly $3.5m to make. The reason it's only asking for $1.5m is because 505 will fork over the other $2m if Indivisible can meet its funding goal. If that doesn't happen, the game will not get made.

If you'd like a more hand-on approach, Lab Zero has a free Windows prototype available now that you can download from the Indiegogo page. Mac and Linux versions will be added in the coming days.

Having launched a mere 13 hours ago, Indivisible has already raised $90,409 towards its $1.5m goal.

Indivisible is being developed for PS4, Xbox One, PC, Mac and Linux with an estimated release of Jan 2018. You can reserve a copy of the game with its soundtrack for $30.
