Project Cars is the first racing simulation to top the charts in two years, since Codemasters' GRID 2 back in 2013.

3DS compilation Puzzle & Dragons Z + Super Mario Edition turned up in 32nd place, meanwhile.

The match-3 puzzler sold just a little more than EA's classic Skate 3, which continues to sell copies on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

UK numbers company Chart-Track notes that around a quarter of Skate 3's lifetime sales date from the last two years, despite the title dating back to 2010.

Grand Theft Auto 5 was second in the chart, ahead of Mortal Kombat X, FIFA 15, Dying Light, COD: Advanced Warfare, Battlefield: Hardline, Minecraft: Xbox Edition, Halo: Master Chef and Destiny.
