Resi 5 outsells UK top ten combined

Biggest first-week since one of COD5's.

Resident Evil 5 topped the UK All-Formats Top 40 in its first week of release, selling more units than all the other top-ten titles combined.

Data compiler Chart-Track also tells us that 55 per cent of sales were on Xbox 360, compared to 45 per cent on PlayStation 3.

Capcom's other recent success, Street Fighter IV, slips out of the top ten for the first time - it's at 13 - but the publisher is unlikely to be disappointed with the biggest sales for a number-one game since Call of Duty: World at War's second week in pole position towards the end of last year.

Elsewhere, Wii Fit jumped back up to number two, occupying the space vacated by Killzone 2 (now at five) and last week's number one, Empire: Total War, which is down to eight.

Other new entries this week are SOCOM: Confrontation at 11, Club Penguin: Elite Penguin Force at 16 and Sonic and the Black Knight at 30.

It's also worth noting that while much of the chart is made up of the usual suspects, including Mario & Sonic (10), Wii Play (15), GTAIV (18), Guitar Hero: World Tour (22) and of course Brain Training (21), there's no longer any room for Dawn of War II or LittleBigPlanet, both of which slip out of the top 40 completely for the first time.

Looking to the future, Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars may well be a shoe-in for number one if Resident Evil's first-week sales subside, and it will also be interesting to see how well MadWorld does.

Check out the full chart below.

Why would they bother to change the control system when it sells like this?

Same old game + sexy graphics + co-op = mega hit.
  • Santino #3 3 years ago

uh, that isn't good. just look at some of the past resi games then look at 5, quality wise it isn't really deserved
  • Spekingur #4 3 years ago

Res5 control system is ancient. Get stuck in a rut, you'll stay in the rut. And die. Painfully. Alone.
  • ryohazuki1983 #5 3 years ago

Playing Resi5 with a mate and having a blast, decent game. Glad it's selling well.

While i am enjoying this installment, it's a resi game in name only...

Good to see Professor Layton still doing well. Speaking of which...where's our sequels, Nintendo? Aren't they already up to the fourth game in Japan? Not to mention the movie!

We also need some 3D Picross ta thanks.
  • penhalion #10 3 years ago

I guess a hell of a lot of people will now be realising the single player game is broken unless you play on easy.
  • stepneg #11 3 years ago

Must be the first time I haven't bought a resi game on release, demo was shite and the only thing that interests me is playing it coop which I can do later when it's cheap.
  • bad09 #12 3 years ago

Well I'm happy for Capcom, seeing as they've already said 5 will be the last of it's kind all that lovely cash can go on a truly great next gen RE game!

Buy it everyone, it may be an (admittedly amusing) mindless shooter with as much in common with real RE games as a wet flannel, but buy it anyway and give Capcom loads of cash for reboot pt2 so RE fans can (hopefully!) finally get a new RE game!
  • jim1975 #13 3 years ago

    @ S.J Rogers "Awful game..."

no Anubis 2 is an awful game. RE5 is a great game you didn't like.
  • Cloudane #14 3 years ago

Am I the only one who is pleased to see Professor Layton sitting at the number four spot?

    It's a lovely game.
  • Slikz #15 3 years ago

@ Penhalion "I guess a hell of a lot of people will now be realising the single player game is broken unless you play on easy.
    "
    Bollocks.

It's far from broken, skill and strategy is whats needed so step up your game!

I'm playing on average and enjoying every bit of it without the need to go co-op, and I intend to play on veteran once completed!

  • stevetuck #18 3 years ago

why are people still buying HAWX :( ace combat 6 was 10* better and its been out for like 2 years :/
  • Cloudane #19 3 years ago

    Opps!

I apologise JHuxley. It's nice to see another person who thinks the same!
  • CallousB #20 3 years ago

"Good to see Professor Layton still doing well. Speaking of which...where's our sequels, Nintendo?"

Really not that much point in releasing a new Layton game while the first is doing so well. I don't see a sequel coming until November at the earliest.
  • secombe #21 3 years ago

Pleased to see HOTD: Overkill in the top 40 still. Always wondered how such a 'colourful' game would do on the Wii.
  • Santino #22 3 years ago

house of the dead is still in the top30 cos if you don't buy it Issac Washington will blow your mother fuckin balls off.
  • makeamazing #23 3 years ago

    Stop being a fanboy CountDucula

Just think how much more RE would have sold if the game didnt have such crappy controls... yay i love using two buttons just to swing a knife. Still its good that a big game is selling well, goes to show the games industry is still holding up well :D
  • the_dudefather #24 3 years ago

Really? the controls in RE5 are shit? must have that option disabled in my version or something

  • Schiraman #25 3 years ago

So mega-hype >> mediocre review scores. Please raise your hand if you're surprised.
  • GreyBeard #26 3 years ago

Pfft no way is RE5 as good a game as Resi4 was. Similar to how DMC4 was inferior to DMC3. Streetfighter games aside I'd argue CapCom are going backwards this gen with their major franchises.

Look past the graphic overhauls and you'll see minimal progress design wise, its actually quite disappointing.
  • Nithron #27 3 years ago

You know what? I like the control system in Resi 5. I don't see any problem with it. You press a direction to move in, then you stop and shoot at things. Like real life.

In fact, it's also like a lot of other shooters, where the accuracy penalty for shooting while moving is so severe that nobody does it.

If you don't like the controls, don't play it. Resident Evil carries on using this control system because it's one of the things that makes it unique; it changes the gameplay. If you don't like the Resident Evil style of gameplay, play another series of games.

I for one don't like Gears of War's gameplay. I don't sit in threads about GOW bitching about it just because i don't like it.
  • brandon-flowers #28 3 years ago

to be honest the tv add does look pretty good!

A lot of peeps probably do not even look at review sites!
  • Darren #29 3 years ago

Resident Evil 5 is a great game IMO, absolutely love it. There's few games that hold my attention these days such that I feel compelled to keep playing them until I complete them but Resident Evil always has and this latest instalment is no different. Utterly addictive.

While the addition of a partner, lack of puzzles and more linear level design might distract from what made Resident Evil what it was, this new game feels in a lot of ways like the old games trimmed of excess fat and cranked up to the max. with more emphasis on action. It's not the best game in the series but when I'm having so much fun playing it, does it matter? Not to me it doesn't. There are so many awesome moments in the game and the boss fights are terrific and varied. My only complaints are the creaky controls and the annoying-at-times real-time inventory but they don't ruin the game fortunately.
  • Kazzahdrane #30 3 years ago

I love how everyone's putting the sales down to the hype and advertising campaign...

    I loved RE4.

I played the RE5 demo and enjoyed it over Live with a friend.

We spent all weekend playing RE5 and loved it.

I was not TRICKED and I am not suddenly shocked that I have a "broken" game. RE has turned into an action horror series, deal with it. If you don't like it then it's simply not for you.
  • makeamazing #31 3 years ago

To say people are morons because they dont like the controls in your beloved game is ... well quite frankly stupid.

I am not a fan of RE.. only have one game on the Wii, which was an on the rails shooter :(. Many more people are not fans but perhaps are interested in the game because it looks interesting. The demo and the game itself do not present themselves in a way to new users to the series that might give it more than 15 minutes play without thinking..."What the hell are these controls about". If your a fan then yes you will give the game longer and get used to the controls and will probably love the game, but gamers are such a fickle bunch (me included), we want it easy to pick up initially with it getting harder as you progress...its called sensible games design :D

Someone I know who loves RE, says yep Control set 3 is alot easier... I couldnt be bothered to look or even try them (as i said we are a fickle bunch ;) its a games designers job to be inclusive of everyone they want to sell the game to.

So to answer your question, I dont lack brain power or motor functions. The controls for a normal non fan of RE suck in my opinion (and thats all it is). If you love the game, then good on you, but try and use that superior gamer brain of yours that you apparently have to use a little common sense and understand that not everyone has your opinion. Remember not having the same opinion as you shouldnt be a problem you know... :D
  • IronGiant #32 3 years ago

I thought the demo would have put people off, certainly did me.. i expect bargain bins to be brimming with second hand copies of this rather soon.
  • JHuxley #33 3 years ago

Really not that much point in releasing a new Layton game while the first is doing so well. I don't see a sequel coming until November at the earliest

Ah...I see. In that case I retract my earlier statement.

Please stop buying Professor Layton. He is a peado with a silly hat who goes about grooming kids under the pretence that he's some kind of 'professor' and needs them to solve his stupid puzzles. Seriously.

OK, so where's my sequel, Nintendo?
  • GamesConnoisseur #34 3 years ago

Based on the whiners, we would have thunk the metacritic average for RE5 to be in 70s or even lower but no, 85 is still a damn good score.

Yeah its not perfect or as critically acclaimed as RE4, but heck RE5 is not that far behind, sure quite too similar to RE4, then we would want that? Then on the other hand co op, and new inventory system (with instant weapon switches on the direction buttons) meaning perhaps too different for some?

RE in name only?! Arse, there is plenty RE materials in the game and the library feature is excellent as well as encouraging you to replay levels and increasing your score in main game and mercenaries mode so can unlock quite a lot of stuff.

Shop and shoot I hated at first, but now used to it and again as many say, in real life people shoot only when they have stopped and aimed, only in FPS do we see regularly people run and shoot from the hip!

Try it out for yourself if in doubt.
  • kaya08 #35 3 years ago

The control system isn't bad, it's just unsuitable for an action game in my opinion. The series has changed pretty drastically with the two most recent games and a lot of people aren't necessarily going to like the changes (or lack of), its hardly surprising its getting a lot of hate.
  • chessboxer #36 3 years ago

Didn't like the RE5 demo. Did like Dead Space.
  • Feanor #37 3 years ago

"So mega-hype >> mediocre review scores. Please raise your hand if you're surprised."

85% is only mediocre in crazyland. Where you apparently reside.
  • 4thVariety #38 3 years ago

My guess is, the high sales numbers are a result of continental Europeans importing the game and make good use of the weak British Pound. Independent sellers at Amazon are undercutting Capcom's retail price by up to 15?. If you look at their description, they all import from the UK. Same at game rental places, they all stock RE5 and it is ALWAYS the UK version. Since all other languages are on the disc too, there is no problem.
  • Goodfella #39 3 years ago

I guess a hell of a lot of people will now be realising the single player game is broken unless you play on easy.

You couldn't be more wrong. I'm breezing throguh the game on Normal difficulty, sheva has died only twice (once was my fault) and is barely a hinderance. Ok, she tends to stick to the pistol until ammo runs out but she's a crackshot and it doesn't matter if you hoard enough ammo for yourself. There's plenty of it to go round.
  • metalangel #40 3 years ago

So long as zombies haven't bitten my face off, Sheva has a place to sit.
  • bad09 #41 3 years ago

    @ Goodfella

I dunno she is pretty useless in the annoying mines I found myself picking up the lamp and putting it down when enemies can along, pretty crap. Mind you halfway through now and apart from that, and a few silly deaths, you're right the AI isn't THAT bad, even helpful.

For me it's not the AI is crap it's the fact it's there in the first place (and the co-op), destroys any kind of atmosphere or fear, and her "helping hand" normally means no fear of death.

Is anyone finding the boss battles really really dull? Even my girlfriend laughed last night at the aim at the giant troll hold fire for 10 minutes!

"On another note, I also don't get how someone can like dead space and not this game seeing as it's pretty much resident evil 5 in space but whatever floats your boat."

One word ATMOSPHERE. DS oozes the stuff. As a huge RE/horror game (survival or not) fan I have to say RE4/5 do not, they are shooters nothing more, somewhat clumsy ones at that. Also in DS the enemies terrorize you leaping at you FAST, charging at you FAST, and EA really got the scares right (something Capcom have lost their way with). RE4/5 is somewhat slow, most of the time the enemies slowly lumber into your sights and bang. That method worked with cinematic cameras but in a 3d shooter these days?

    @ CountFapula

Please RE5 has no atmosphere, hell I'd even go as far a saying it's boring

While Africa was bold and brilliant move it turns out the generic (although beautiful) locations could be COD4's leftovers (admittedly I'm only halfway through though so can only go on the first half of the game so far) pale in comparison of other RE games.

The constant repeated babble from Sheeva "thanks" "I owe you one" "here take this" etc, becomes very annoying and destroys ANY illusion. Huge press this button flashes again destroy any illusion. enemies that dissolve into ammo and health again destroys any illusion.

Not once have I jumped, felt threatened, or even just lost myself in the game. NOT ONCE! kind of lame for a game in a horror series...

Seriously how any RE fan (who did not start at 4) can say 5, or indeed 4, have atmosphere, as a BIG RE fan is beyond me. It really is.

Oh and knocking Mrs bad09's gaming taste is not gonna change the fact that the boss battles are (so far anyway) dull. Might make you look a little pathetic though dude....
