Gran Turismo 5 delayed again

No longer March in Japan.

Update: In related news, Sony Europe has said that the delay is "only applicable for the Japanese market".

Original story: Sony has said that Gran Turismo 5 will not be released in Japan this March after all, and in fact it doesn't know when the game will be released.

Gran Turismo 5, originally announced at E3 2006, has been in development for 400 million years, but the threat of its slip-slidey release date becoming a complete joke looked to have been alleviated when the company announced a March date during the Tokyo Game Show.

Things also looked to be going well given the launch of the GT5 Academy Time Trial demo on 17th December, which had been downloaded one million times in Europe, Australia and New Zealand according to an announcement yesterday.

Sony has blamed the latest delay on ambiguous production issues, according to Reuters.

    Hehe. GTNukemForever?
  • Vroom #2 2 years ago

    Lolzer$

I wonder if it has anything to do with the luke warm reaction to the demo/promo?
  • swissorc #3 2 years ago

oh well looks like I wont be buying my ps3 any time soon then
  • Bealsy #4 2 years ago

They might as well just pin this at the top of the page instead of making a new article every week...
  • BBIAJ #5 2 years ago

They've had more than enough time already, this is just taking the piss!
  • Stifler #6 2 years ago

I really love(d) GT but I'm finding it harder and harder to care these days with all the constant delays and "yeah we're ready to ship any time now we're just polishing"

It'll be a giant money spinner but I hope they at least learn from the mistakes they have made this time round....what am I saying of course they wont!

Wonder how cheap Forza 3 is these days......

Edited to add: Of course, seeing as we never actually got a release date for EU perhaps there wont be a delay for us....not that it hasn't taken long enugh already mind.

I have both PS3 and 360 and have been really looking forward to this. I would be playing Forza right now if MS would start supporting Logitech steering wheels. But that will never happen, so I will continue to wait for this.
  • altitude2k #8 2 years ago

It's not as if they're not working hard on it, though. Just look at the work they've done on the driver model, for example:

Christ, at this rate Forza 5 will be out before GT5...
  • the_dudefather #10 2 years ago

Out the same day as Alan Wake then?
  • Negotiator #11 2 years ago

What a joke, whats the bet Forza 4 will be out before this.
  • wizlon #12 2 years ago

You know what, I don't even care anymore...
  • Negotiator #13 2 years ago

"oh well looks like I wont be buying my ps3 any time soon then"

Swissorc, if it's already yours, who are you buying it from?
  • Antaios #14 2 years ago

Hahaha. How exactly does this still manage to be news then? I agree with Vroom! though; Polyphony (and Sony) are no doubt very aware of the reactions to the demo.

Anyway: that's it. I'm not buying. Played the demo, hated it for five minutes and deleted it. Not looking forward to this at all anymore. And the constant delaying / postponing is starting to lead to some sort of 'anti-hype' now. At least, in my case it is.
  • menage #15 2 years ago

    Ducks for incoming hatewave

But seriously, WTF? Roll on Forza 4 then.
  • Stifler #16 2 years ago

    @Duckncover:

The Fanatec Turbo wheels works on all platforms (PC, 360 and PS3) and is by far the best wheel on the market (clutch pedal, H pattern shifter etc etc).

Worth a look if that's all that's holding you back.
  • themorganator #17 2 years ago

OMG, four years and counting. I better be twice as good as forza or we're being robbed!
  • Johnsters #18 2 years ago

I do care a little about this.
I kinda dabbled with GT4 and GT Prologue a bit but no where near as much time invested in GT3 and GT2.

I can wait for this. Too many other games to play.
But I can't help thinking how much damage this is causing. If it's less than a 9, it'll be classed as a delayed failure.
  • rob76 #19 2 years ago

beyond a joke now... what makes you wanna cry most is GT fanbois slating Forza series. Lucky for me I own both consoles so can happily plod along in Forza 3. When GT5 comes along will have a thought on whether to go for it or wait for Forza 4.

The GT Academy release wasn't a demo. In the words of Yamauchi (or Translator-san) himself:

“We created the Time Trial purely as the mechanic to run the first phase of GT Academy 2010. The massive interest is testament to the strong GT Academy concept that offers the chance to make a dream come true. But it also clearly demonstrates the popularity of Gran Turismo. This Time Trial is only a tiny sample of what is to come in Gran Turismo 5, so it is particularly pleasing to have seen such a positive reaction to it.”

  • mc_mclovin #21 2 years ago

I have to say, having downloaded and played the demo, i couldnt actually care less when this gets released, because if the demo is anything to go by, it wont be a patch on forza 3...sure the grahics are all sparkly (nice particle effects) but where it really counts...the actual driving....it doesnt come close to forza!
  • Twin_snakes #22 2 years ago

"OMG, four years and counting. I better be twice as good as forza or we're being robbed!"
How are we beging robbed evatly? we haven't actually spent anything on the game so a long dev time isn't goibg to cost us anything.
  • Zebula77 #23 2 years ago

This is getting ridiculous. Didn't they say earlier that the game was finished and they were just adding finishing touches and flourishes?

    Bah humbug.
  • Miths #24 2 years ago

This is just getting ridiculous. I wish I could just pretend I didn't care, but I love racing games and my Logitech G25 is really aching for a good workout.
I love NFS Shift (the sense of speed and the "dynamic" cockpit view make both GT5P and Forza 3 - particularly the latter which really disappointed with the cockpit view, even with the workaround for a wider field of view - look bland beyond belief), but I'm really looking forward to the much larger car and track selection in GT5.

These constant delays are almost convincing me to try to come up with clever ideas for hooking up my G25 in front of my PC and start playing GTR2 and RACE again, like I did a few years ago before I moved to a new apartment and bought a fancy, curved glass work desk that has no room for a wheel.

Edit: Hey, whaddya know - my Wheelstand Pro actually just fits under my PC desk, and my new 24" monitor means it won't feel like I'm looking at a tiny screen when I move the chair back a little. I think I'll be buying GTR Evolution and Race On today.

This could very well be to spread the exclusives a bit more over the year. Make a bit room for Heavy Rain and God of War III. Maybe if we're lucky we get a global release and we have nothing to worry about. Fingers crossed.

    @Stifler & @duckncover

The Fanatec wheel is absolutely great. I bought the Fanatec wheel mainly for compatibility reasons, but it's the best (semi-affordable) wheel I've used overall. Both Forza and the GT5 demo work great with it. I would recommend it.
  • Bazfrag #26 2 years ago

Fuck all the gt haters. It is too hard now it's a proper sim? Need some steering assists to complete a lap? Pathetic.
  • T4RG4 #27 2 years ago

  • anonim1979 #28 2 years ago

Demo was VERY sh1ttty - poor graphics and not even fluid 60fps...
    ...so they are fixing engine.

Forza 4 will be ready before USA/EU GT5 launch.

  • NotSoSlim #34 2 years ago

May as well do worldwide release now

Plus if people stll think the demo available to dl was the latest build just watch the CES videos

    Blind fanboys
  • Murton #35 2 years ago

It doesn't matter if it's delayed again, it will still be far and away ahead of everything this gen in terms of build quality and content. Polyphony have always delayed GT, they're pretty much the embodiment of the word "perfectionist" in a world where most developers are content to say "that'll do. we'll patch it later if we can be bothered" and invariably don't patch.

Slightly off topic but did Eurogamer make it a New Years resolution to deliberately word articles to bait fanboys in order to increase the number of comments posted? It certainly seems that way as we've seen a number of digs at platform exclusives recently: "been in development for 400 million years" Alan Wake was first showcased the E3 before that so I guess Remedy inherited the basic design from a pack of particularly creative velocoraptors. Grow up.
  • cianchristopher #36 2 years ago

Yeah, but Alan Wake is a new IP - GT5 is an iterative sequel...

And PD don't always take ages to make games and delay, delay, delay because they're such perfectionists. Here are the releases of the first four GT games:

    GT - 97; GT2 - 99; GT3 - 2001; GT4 - 2004....

That sort of contradicts everything the GT apologists have been saying, no?

C'mon guys, let's call a spade a spade... This has gone beyond a joke...
  • Miths #37 2 years ago

"May as well do worldwide release now"

I guess there's still a tiny hope that that could actually happen now. It seems like the EU and US stores were guessing at a June release anyway, so with any luck it will just be the Japanese release date that's getting pushed.
Then again, given Polyphony's track record so far, a Christmas 2010 release is probably more likely. Or Summer 2011 :).
  • chrisola #38 2 years ago

It will be delayed again once Forza 4 comes out.

Also, from what i remember, GT series doesn't have tyre \ skid marks on the track? So cars seem to float about. Or maybe that was just the first game and they fixed it, haven't actually tried the Prologue or demo for PS3!

  • Murton #39 2 years ago

GT5 an iterative sequel? It's a ground up new game with the exception of the important models from GT4. New AI, new damage model, new handling, whole new engine. That stuff takes time, I'd say it's probably fair to say that as much work has gone into GT5 as any new IP would receive.

Also the release dates you have quoted are from previous gen where development cycles were shorter anyway. It doesn't take anything away from the fact that PD have always been perfectionists who release when they're happy with the product and not before. Fact remains GT5 will be solid as a rock at a time when games are shipping with more playability issues than ever before and brimming with content while other developers are making cuts, that makes it worth the wait in my opinion and I'm sure the sales figures will support that argument.
  • tancredo #40 2 years ago

Most used sentence of a PS3 owner over the last 4 years when discussing driving games and how all games are s***t compared to the mighty GT5:

" it's no doubt going to be the greatest racing game ever bar none. so they can afford to take their time and get it perfect "

(of course one can argue the same about Alan Wake, but I do not think the game has as much hype as GT5)
  • cianchristopher #41 2 years ago

Jesus, Murton, you sound so sure of it...

How do you know that GT5 will be "solid as a rock"? You're just setting yourself up for disappointment! Ever hear of a little healthy scepticism?

You and Hindle have been saying that "this will be the greatest racing game ever, bar none"... Based on what? I sure hope it's not based on GT5 Prologue..
  • bigtechno #42 2 years ago

    Forza 3 is about £25
I wasn't impressed with the GT5 hot lap
I have forza and think it's a better game ok graphics won't be as good
but who knows what the graphics will be like by the time this actually comes out
that another to cancel from my pre-order list
  • iamtheoneneo #43 2 years ago

ok this is seriously a joke now...
the games been developed for so many years and all theve pushed out is a seriously bad demo and now this..... imnot holding up any hope for this anymore.
    seriously retarded....
and the fanboys saying it doesnt matter it will still be amazing etc etc - how the fuck do you know? prologue was crap , gt psp was crap and you seriously expect this to be good after a pisspoor demo??? lol the joke will be on you.

Just go back to the Dayton USA/Ridge Racer days. Hardly any cars to choose from, hardly any tracks but endless gameplay - I mean Daytona is still found in every single arcade even now. They also got released back in those days too - we could actually get to play racing games then.

    Psch kids today.
  • Diabeu #47 2 years ago

this is getting silly beyond any recognition,

This Is.....................Waiting, GT fans should get some kind of Master of Zen Trophy, or something like that
  • citizenHUNTER #48 2 years ago

Ok I've enjoyed my xbox and racing games on that platform for a while now and had been ignoring the prospect of GT5 since I didn't see me getting a PS3 anytime soon. Thanks to Mrs Xmas that's changed and having played the clearly transitional GT5 Prologue and the Academy trial (sporting what I thought was great physics and driving feeling) I'm back in the GT camp. Forza 3 is great and the game really is challenging but it still feels a bit disconnected to me, and a bit too easy to drive even with no assists. There's plenty of depth there but largely the track selection is disappointing to me personally. The presentation is better than GT and doesn't feature easy listening Jazz in the menu screens either which is an added bonus :p

I think you can tell a lot by the replays, GT5 looks real, believable. I'm talking more about the movement of the cars here, the way they react, bump about, steer into corners. Forza is close but something still seems not quite right. GT has this feeling and look sussed.

However GT seems on course to take a step ahead I feel. Tons of content, everything fitting into place and with the sheen of visual perfection to top it all I cannot wait. I hope and I think the time spent means we are in for something pretty special.

I'm just glad I finally have both consoles so I get the best of both worlds.

It's only my opinion but we might as well look forward hopeful it's something special rather than wish the thing burns unto the ground just so we can make a point. The delays are getting ridiculous and maybe I feel they have seen the competition and realised they have needed to step things up a notch (such as including, finally, damage modelling) but in the end we may have a definitive game of sorts because of it.
  • HuggyAtHome #49 2 years ago

My the time the game gets released there won't be a car industry left, and we will all be driving Wipeout style. Don't see why everybody is so excited about GT5 anyway - the series lost it with GT4 - just more of the same but a little bit prettier. I love my PS3 but I just don't get excited about this title at all.
