Gran Turismo 5 dated for Japan News

PlayStation 3 News by Tom Bramwell

24 September, 2009

Sony and Polyphony Digital have announced that Gran Turismo 5 will be released for PlayStation 3 in March 2010 in Japan.

The game will feature 20 locations with over 70 tracks, full "Gran Turismo" mode for single-player and multiplayer, and some form of communication with the PSP.

Speaking at the Tokyo Game Show, developer Polyphony also confirmed some of the details that leaked onto its website a while ago - like video exports to PSP and YouTube, and hybrid and electric cars.

Those website leaks also told us to expect 1000 vehicles, 170 of which will have full interior modelling. Sony hasn't refuted any of the details.

Check out our recent hands-on with the game focusing on the damage modelling for more.

I'm confused wasn't we told by Sony we'd have it by the end of 2009? Oh well not that bothered with Forza out soon TBH.

Europe is the most important and biggest market world wide for Gran Turismo. So I wouldn't count its release out for this side of Christmas.

It will have been 4 years if GT5 gets released Christmas 2010. I preparing myself for a letdown just like GT-PSP.

Does anyone else wish the makers of Forza or Gran Tourismo would give us more tracks, even at the cost of fewer cars?

I've never understood the concept of hundreds of cars and only a few tracks (baring in mind whatever the makers list as the number fail to tell us that includes several variations of the same track). Maybe it's me – I can't say I'm much of a car person to be honest – cars are just tools to get a job done... I like racing and try and use the best car for the job. I fail to see the logic in giving games like Forza and Gran Tourismo dozens of cars that are utterly uncompetitive and will probably get ignored by the majority. While we'll all have favourite tracks or ones we can't stand racing on, surely we can't have enough of them, can we?

Hybrid and electric cars? So we'll be able to race a bunch of Priuses down the Top Gear-track?
That's kinda like Cobain singing Bon Jovi-songs in Guitar Hero: Clarkson might sue.

The 170 thing related to extensive damage modelling, not the car interior. During this talk Kaz mentioned that damage would be available on all cars. May well be the reason why it's announced for March, maybe all the complaints about the damage shown at gamescom worried them. :p

Still disappointed though - basically this means I'll be unlocking all cars using the PSP in advance (which is also confirmed, and the 'some form of PSP interaction' that the article vagues up). And it's very likely I'll get a Gold subscription again and play some Forza 3 in the meantime. Turn10 must have been popping champagne last night. :D

I hate the fact that only 17% of the cars will have interior modelling! That's really shit! So much for Polyphony's "perfectionism", eh? This looks about as half-assed as their PSP "effort".

This series is dead and gone, I hope this is the last Gran Turismo game and the studio either does something different or fucks off for good!

Forza is a far better game, it is a far better series, it is far better managed, its fans are treated with far more respect, it is moving in the right direction, it is the better driving experience.......... and it's actually out next month!

Such a disapointment, potentially another year of waiting for GT5. it's going to have to absoultly wipe the floor with forza to justify the development time who speaking of which must be very happy knowing have the simulation market to themselves for the all important christmas market. (Well apart from need for speed shift but is that really considered a threat?)

Ha... I just KNEW the game would not come out before Christmas despite people claiming it would. Unless the game is quickly released after the Japanese version then I suspect we're looking at the best part of a year before we'll see it in the U.S. (to import) or Europe. Polyphony Digital have NEVER been able to meet a deadline yet so it should come as no surprise to ANYONE really. But as the saying goes... good things come to those who wait... and wait... and wait... ;)

P.S. I thought the 170 figure referred to the fact that that number of cars would have interior DAMAGE modelling, not that only 170 cars would have modelled interiors. Am I wrong? :?

Ok it may be 6 months from now but in reality if it had been released this year it would have been in December so its only a delay of 3 months still annoying though and while it looks stunning there has been no hint of daytime/night time transitions or weather or anything that means it should take so long to produce.

Personally, I can wait. I'd rather have a polished, finished game than one than was rushed to meet a Christmas deadline. I know console games can be easily patched these days but it is still better to release it as near-complete as possible.

Turn10 just need to put the Top Gear track as a free DLC with Forza 3. That is, if they have ever heard of Top Gear - if they haven't then I have lost all faith in them.

Did you see the new Italian coast track? It's blatantly inspired by the "Best Road in Europe" episode.

Might be interested in GT5 next year if the PS3 goes down another bit in price though.

Damn MS and their gold member exclusive demos. I haven't had a gold XBL membership for over a year as I barely use my 360 anymore, but now that FM3 demo was looking so tempting that I ended up paying for it.
But I guess I'll need that gold membership anyway if I plan on getting Forza 3 and playing online.

170 refers to interior damage modelling, GT5P already has 40-50+ cars with regular interiors. Dissapointing as it is, a 3 month delay will be worth it judging by the new features and graphical perfection shown in the Ferrari 458 Italia trailer.

No surprise. Like a lot of others, I never thought for a moment this game would be out in 2009.

I think this is a smart move by PD. They have clearly decided to react to all the negative feedback they have been getting due to the poor implementation of damage. Ironically, the damage has already been done - to the hype surrounding this game.

This is going to be a big blow in the jaw for GT fans across the globe. Sony had to know this so, what was the point in lying? Either the game was almost ready some time ago and they decided to give it some mayor improvements (say damage) o it has never been so advanced in development as they have claimed lately...

Many champagne bottles will have been opened by now in Turn10 and Microsoft's headquarters, their sales expectations for Forza 3 and 360 have just risen a lot, to them it means no direct competence for at least 5 months (and those are critical months!). 360 is quite cheap by now and many GT followers may jump in to lessen the wait and to have a taster of that Forza thing that has been hyped about for so long.

PS: I pity poor guys at Bizarre Creations, terrible timing again, their release window for Blur may have been shattered for good (or released to 2010 Q3...).
