Eidos Montreal confirms Thief 4
Or THI4F, as the studio calls it.
Eidos Montreal has finally confirmed Thief 4 on its studio website.
"We're in the early development stages for Thief 4, but this is an incredibly ambitious project and a very exciting one," writes Stephane D'Astous, general manager.
"It's too early for us to offer any specific game details; right now we are focused on recruiting the very best talent to join the core team at the studio and help us make what we believe will be one of the most exciting games on the market."
No platforms nor dates are mentioned, although PC, PS3, Xbox 360 and "2010/11" are likely.
Thief, a stealth-action series, casts players as a nimble assassin who must creep through the shadows and use an array of sly tactics to achieve varying mission goals. The original was one of the best games of 1998, as our Gold Edition review mentions.
Excited.

Stupid name though

Um...nimble assassin? The name 'Thief' wouldn't be appropriate if that were the case. The series has traditionally discouraged you from killing.
THI4F
No.

If they don't fuck up Deux Ex 3, that is.

Using leetspeek pronunciation, that would be "THIAF". Using normal person pronunciation, it would be "THIFOURF".
I say F4IL!

There are some franchises I just want to take out of the hands of the games industry and put on a shelf for ten years until we can reboot them with due consideration and reverence.
Fallout, Condemned, and now Thief.

I diden't know they were going for a street racer vibe for the name. 0_o

THI4F: Master assassin Garrett is back, and this time he is taking the one thing you cannot afford to lose...your life
Go ahead and use that, Eidos, just make sure you give me some credit.

Although to be fair, it's just a teaser site with a logo that somebody probably whipped up during his lunch break. There's nothing to indicate that it's going to be the final name.

I expect to see a 360 pad on the control screen, size 20 text and subtitles for all audio so it looks ok on tvs.
No rushed ports please!!!

He is not an assassin. He's a very naughty boy.

On the name front, I bet a bunch of staff at Eidos are right this minute reading a slew of posts on the web explaining how Thi4f is a stupid name that has cocked up the A=4 association.
It might literally be the first thing a concept artist chucked together for the site before heading off to lunch, and I would be amazed if the name remains in its current form come release.
BUT, if it does I won't give two hoots so long as the game is fun.
And may I also add my 2p to the growing "I don't want to be an assassin" pile. I have Hitman and AC for that. Thief is about getting in, nicking stuff, and getting out... with as little interaction with the enemies as possible. I care about that far more than whatever name they end up with.

I don't really care about the name as long as the game is great, though. And Mirror's Edge has proved that first-person could still be a viable route and a vital part of the brand, even though the third-person in Thief 3 worked OK.

4 sounds like for, there's 4 people per team, there's a left hand with 4 fingers on the cover, it all makes sense.
With Thief 4 it doesn't, they replaced the E with 4, wich doesn't work.
