Early GOTY contender Ultimate Chicken Horse is out now on Steam

Online multiplayer beta coming "extremely soon".

Multiplayer competitive platformer Ultimate Chicken Horse is out now for PC, Mac and Linux via Steam.

PS4, Xbox One and Wii U versions are planned to launch later.

The party game tasks up to four players to collaborate on building a stage, with each person picking one piece of scenery to add to the level. The goal is to make the stage challenging enough that your friends won't get it to the finish line, yet easy enough that you can make it there.

After each round you're given a new box of objects ranging from propeller-based platforms, buzzsaws, teleporters, crossbows, stairs and more. Get to the goalpost and you'll receive bonus points for everyone who died to one of your traps. If everyone makes it, however, the stage is deemed "too easy" and no one gets points.

So far the game only supports local multiplayer, but it will be getting online support with a beta for that going live "extremely soon". Actually, it was previously available, but developer Clever Endeavour Games had to temporarily pull it at the last minute because of a bug. Fear not, as this feature will return shortly.

Online support was originally a stretch goal on the game's Kickstarter campaign, though the total tally fell just shy of that. Still, Clever Endeavour decided to go forward with that regardless. "We decided to do it anyway because we knew people would appreciate it and we knew that it would help us make the game as awesome as it deserves to be," the developer said on Steam.

Generally Ultimate Chicken Horse is priced at £10.99 / $14.99, but the game is 10 per cent off until 11th March, making it currently £9.89 / $13.49.

I played a fair share of Ultimate Chicken Horse pre-release and called it "an early frontrunner for game of 2016."
