Sony edges closer to 50m PS4 sales, PSVR "on track"

PS4 Pro still to come.

Sony's latest financials reveal a further 3.9m PlayStation 4 consoles were shipped between the start of July and end of September, taking the worldwide tally up to 47.4m PS4s shipped. PS4 passed the 40 million worldwide sales milestone in May.

That three-month period included the launch of the cheaper PS4 Slim console, which arrived in 500GB form 16th September, and 1TB form 29th September.

That three-month period did not include the 13th October launch of PlayStation VR, sales of which, Sony said in the financial report, "are on track".

Sony also still has the PlayStation 4 Pro to launch. That more powerful console arrives 10th November.

"The current quarter was a period during which our hardware was changing due to the launch of a new model of PS4 in September," said Sony in its FY 2016 Q2 report. "The year-on-year decrease in operating income was primarily due to the price cut of the new PS4 model ... [and] the residual impact of decreased PS3 software sales.

"However, the strong momentum of the business continues, as is shown in the 31 per cent year-on-year increase in network revenues. The sales of PSVR, which was launched in October, are on track. Furthermore, this month, we plan to launch the PS4 Pro, a high value-added model."
