Activision plans further Spider-Man titles

Spider-Man 3 set for release in 2007, with a comic-based title due out next year.

Spider-Man 2 won't be swinging into cinemas until the end of June, but that hasn't stopped Activision announcing plans to develop and publish games based on Spider-Man 3, which is currently pencilled in for release sometime in 2007.

The publisher also confirmed that it still holds the videogame rights to the Spider-Man comic book character, and plans to make a comic book-derived game for release during 2005. The company previously enjoyed critical and commercial success with the comic-based franchise on the original PlayStation thanks to Tony Hawk developer Neversoft, although the PSX sequel was decidedly less impressive.

Sadly at this point very little is known about either of the games or the third movie, although Tobey McGuire and Kirsten Dunst have signed on to reprise their roles as Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Mary Jane Watson respectively on the big screen, and director Sam Raimi will continue to helm the cinematic franchise.

Activision has yet to discuss formats for either game title, although we'd speculate that next year's comic-based game will appear on PS2, Xbox, Cube, PC and GBA (and possibly DS and PSP - who knows?), while the formats for Spider-Man 3 probably haven't been decided yet. After all, who knows what the console landscape will look like in 2007?

Expect to hear more about the comic-based Spider-Man later this year, although you probably shouldn't expect to hear anything about Spider-Man 3 for a good while yet. Then again, that's what we thought when we got up this morning...
