Sonic Rivals for PSP

2D racing in 3D levels.

Death Jr developer Backbone's working on a brand new Sonic title for PlayStation Portable, SEGA announced this morning as part of its run of pre-E3 announcements.

Called Sonic Rivals, it's a mixture of old-style speedy platform action and four-player wireless action - promising 2D gameplay in 3D environments, are you can see in the first run of screenshots.

Instead of exploring levels, it sounds like Sonic will be racing his rivals through them. You'll be able to control any of four characters - including Sonic and Knuckles - each with a winding storyline, with boost moves and power-ups with which to trip up the others as they go. On the way, there'll be various traps and hazards to dodge, courtesy of Eggman.

Sonic Rivals is due out this autumn on PSP, and should be on-hand at E3.

Meanwhile, SEGA's line-up for the show grows ever clearer, with Sonic Rivals joining Full Auto 2 (PS3), SEGA Rally (PS3, X360, PC), World Snooker Championship/Challenge 2007 (PS2, PS3, X360, PSP), Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz (Wii) and Virtua Tennis 3 (PS3, X360) on the cards.
