Top Gun for DS

It can be our wingman, etc.

Pin on your pilot wings, put on your oxygen mask and look up the highway to the danger zone on AA Autoroute - US publisher Mastiff is producing a new Top Gun game for the Nintendo DS. Screenshots are here, and there's a trailer on Eurofiles.

In a press release that inevitably contains the phrase "high octane" but is mysteriously missing "adrenaline-fuelled" and "turbo-powered", we're told that you'll start out as one of the top one per cent of the top one per cent of the top one per cent of the world's best naval aviators, selected for elite training in Fightertown, USA.

There are ten single-player missions to play through, varying from high altitude dogfights to escort and security missions. But no word on any intensely homoerotic levels involving semi-naked beach volleyball.

We're promised realistic weather effects and a huge range of weapons including machine guns, fire-and-forget projectiles and homing missiles - and best of all, you can play as characters from the movie! Bagsy be Slider.

Up to four players can go head-to-head for wireless multiplayer matches and the game will feature music "reminiscent" of the movie soundtrack - so it looks like no Kenny Loggins, sadly.

There's no word yet on how the game will make use of the DS's dual screens though we like the idea of shooting down Russkies on the top one while Kelly McGillis cooks our tea on the bottom.

A release date has yet to be announced, but we'll keep you posted, whilst keeping our fingers crossed that this is the first Top Gun game to be any good at all.
