Miyamoto unsure on F-Zero future

"I don't really have a good idea for what's new that we could bring."

Nintendo's top designer Shigeru Miyamoto has said he is unsure when we'll see a return for sci-fi racing series F-Zero.

Problem number one for Miyamoto is a lack of new direction for the franchise, despite the number of fans still asking for its return.

"I certainly understand that people want a new F-Zero game," Miyamoto explained to IGN. "I think where I struggle is that I don't really have a good idea for what's new that we could bring to F-Zero that would really turn it into a great game again."

Meanwhile, the upcoming Mario Kart 8 will borrow heavily from F-Zero's trademark crazy tracks and anti-gravity style.

"Certainly I can see how people looking at Mario Kart 8 could see, through the anti-gravity, a connection to F-Zero," Miyamoto continued. "But I don't know, at this point, what direction we could go in with a new F-Zero."

The last full F-Zero games to be released were GameCube incarnation F-Zero GX and its arcade-based brother F-Zero AX, way back in 2003.

F-Zero has popped up again more recently - characters and levels feature in the Smash Bros. series, and there's a rather simplistic F-Zero mini-game in Nintendo Land - but a fully-fledged new title has proven elusive.
