Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has a new unlockable character for beating its hardest difficulty

Gold.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for Nintendo Switch includes a special unlockable character if you beat all tracks on its hardest 200cc difficulty. Introducing... Gold Mario:

Gold Mario is likely just a palette swap for the already-existing Metal Mario.

Deluxe is Wii U game Mario Kart 8's upcoming Switch port, with all of the racer's DLC plus a handful of new characters and a proper Battle Mode.

Sadly, there are no new tracks for the game's main grand prix races.

All of Deluxe's other new characters were previously announced: King Boo, Dry Bones, and Bowser Jr return from earlier instalments in the series, alongside Splatoon's two Inklings. There's still no Birdo. (Sorry, Birdo fans.)

The latest trailer below shows off some of the new Battle Mode maps, which revisit locales like Wuhu Island from Wii Sports Resort, and areas which look like Luigi's Mansion and Wario Colosseum.
