Mafia 3 fires up UK chart, launch sales up nearly 60% on Mafia 2

Paper Mario files into 14th.

Mafia 3 has scored a huge opening week in the UK charts, with sales up 58.7 per cent on Mafia 2.

Kicking ass and taking names.

The open world crime threequel earned its series' largest opening week - by far - although it still had to settle for second place behind FIFA 17.

EA's football juggernaut comfortably won the chart's top spot for the second week running, although sales of it and Mafia were far above anything else in the top 10.

Forza Horizon 3 was third, above evergreen titles such as Grand Theft Auto 5 and Rocket League.

Wii U-exclusive Paper Mario: Color Splash entered the chart in 14th place, above other new entries Ride 2 (which charted in 20th place) and Warhammer: The End Times - Vermintide (34th).

As usual it's worth remembering that Chart-Track's UK numbers count physical sales only - hence the low numbers for Vermintide's disc release. It makes Mafia 3's success over its predecessor all the more impressive, however, when you consider how physical sales have declined in the six years since Mafia 2 released.

Mafia 3 launched last Friday but you probably won't have seen any reviews for it yet. Publisher 2K did not provide advance copies to Eurogamer, or anyone else, but we should have our verdict by mid-week.
