EA to shutter the Medal of Honor brand following Warfighter's "well below expectations" sales

Fuse delayed to Q2. FIFA 13 sold over 12 million units before New Years.

EA is putting its recently resurrected Medal of Honor brand out to pasture, following the "well below expectations" sales of its most recent entry Warfighter.

"Critics were polarized and gave the game scores which were, frankly, lower than it deserved," said EA COO Peter Moore during a recent financial call. "This one is behind us now. We are taking Medal of Honor out of the rotation and have a plan to bring year-over-year continuity to our shooter offerings."

EA Labels president Frank Gibeau added, "We're in a hit-driven business where it's about what you can build in a certain period of time and really deliver for the marketplace, and frankly we missed on Medal of Honor. And we take responsibility for that."

Medal of Honor: Warfighter review

Warfighter sounds like a joke. It's the sort of ludicrously macho title you'd expect to find on a mischievous Grand Theft Auto parody of first-person military shooters, or perhaps a cheesy Rainier Wolfcastle movie in The Simpsons. What's really disappointing is that either of those options would be more entertaining than what's ended up on this disc.

That Medal of Honor: Warfighter is utterly generic and devoid of personality doesn't come as much of a surprise. Clearly dusted off to fill the years when DICE can't provide EA with a new Battlefield game, Medal of Honor's rebirth as a khaki placeholder is now complete. This is not a game that seeks to challenge or innovate. It's here to give you exactly what you expect and nothing more. Yet even when following in the footsteps of others, it can't help tripping over its own boots.

The story finds you hopping from one Tier One operative to another across a fragmented time frame as you close in on The Cleric, a shadowy terrorist leader who should in no way be taken as a stand-in for Bin Laden. You pop up in Pakistan, Yemen, Dubai and Sarajevo to take down evil Muslims, Somalian pirates and swarthy Eastern Europeans. Stark captions tell you that events happened SIX WEEKS AGO or EIGHTEEN HOURS LATER - but none of it adds up to anything compelling, or even coherent.

Make sure you download the Medal of Honor day one patch

Make sure you download the Medal of Honor day one patch

"Fixed an issue where controls would become unresponsive under certain conditions."

There is a day one patch for shooter Medal of Honor and it fixes more than you'd expect.

The patch, for consoles and PC, includes a raft of fixes for both the single-player and multiplayer portion of the Danger Close-developed first-person shooter.

The patch notes are available on the EA website, but I thought it would be fun to pick out some of my favourite fixes.

Medal of Honor Warfighter beta coming exclusively to Xbox 360

The official military shooter of Linkin Park.

Medal of Honor Warfighter is getting a beta early next month exclusively on Xbox Live, publisher EA has announced.

The beta will premiere a new multiplayer mode called Hotspot which sounds like Warfighter parlance for King of the Hill as it tasks players with attacking and defending randomly-selected bases on a Sarajevo Stadium map.

In a curious promotion, EA will grant players early access to Linkin Park's Castle of Glass music video if over three million users download the beta. Evidently the video incorporates gameplay footage from Warfighter and will be released publicly five days after the beta.

First Medal of Honor: Warfighter details

Hardcore mode, co-op confirmed, Bin Laden mission ruled out.

Forthcoming FPS sequel Medal of Honor: Warfighter features a new one-shot-kill hardcore mode as well as some kind of co-operative play.

As reported by CVG, developer Danger Close hasn't detailed exactly what form the co-op content will take, though a full multiplayer campaign seems unlikely.

As with the 2010 franchise reboot, the game will focus on Tier 1 Operators as they go about their day-to-day. Real life soldiers have apparently contributed to the game's storylines.
