Ancient coin-op classic Warlords is the latest Atari property to get the remake treatment, with a fresh take due on PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade this summer.

First released back in 1980, it's a twist on the Breakout formula with you attempting to destroy the walls of three opposing fortresses by bouncing projectiles around the screen before you suffer the same fate.

The 21st-century makeover adds a range of local and online multiplayer modes including co-op siege mode, two-on-two or classic free-for-all battles.

It's being handled by Griptonite Games, whose CV includes Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines, the DS version of Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions and DS puzzler Mystery Case Files: MillionHeir. Have a glance at the trailer below to see where it's taking the franchise.

"Warlords infuses the arcade action genre with a bold and vibrant visual style coupled with robust strategy gameplay," commented Atari CEO Jim Wilson.

"It exemplifies our design goals and company strategy as we reintroduce these classic brands to a new generation of gamers."

This isn't the first time the game has been remade. Atari released an HD version on Xbox Live Arcade back in 2008 developed by UK studio Stainless Games.

It seems vault-raiding is all the rage at Atari of late. Back in October it revealed that a fresh take on 1979 shooter Star Raiders was also in the works.
