New Resi film lifts stuff from Resi 5

Anderson also promises better dogs.

Paul W. S. Anderson admired Resident Evil 5 so much that he ended up lifting stuff from it for a redraft of his upcoming film, Resident Evil: Afterlife.

"I thought it kind of reinvented the videogame franchise and I wanted to take a lot of it, frankly kind of like, steal from it and put it in the movie," he told ShockTillYouDrop (thanks Kotaku).

"There's a whole fight scene that we're about to shoot that we start next week with Ali Larter and Wentworth Miller which is taken almost - well, is taken shot by shot from Resident Evil 5."

Anderson, who directed the original Resident Evil film and has written the scripts for all four, also joked about how cagey Capcom is about releasing details on the series storyline before the games come out.

"Talking to Capcom, Capcom's so funny. It's like every time I go to Japan and meet Capcom it is like going to see the Umbrella Corporation because you ask them things and they won't give you a straight answer about anything.

"It's like I kind of knew they would tell me that Wesker was in the game, kind of, but they would never really confirm it. Then, sure enough, he was the main villain and he was the main villain in the movie as well."

Resident Evil: Afterlife is due in cinemas this September in the US, and Anderson said that it attempts to make a conceptual jump a bit like Terminator to Terminator 2. But don't worry - it still has all the things you'd expect.

"It'll have all the really cool Resident Evil things in it," he confirmed. "The characters from the game, the dogs that you've seen, but the dogs on a new level.

"These dogs are a massive improvement on the dogs before." Woof.

I hope there is a scene whereby someone starts beating up a boulder

"It'll have all the really cool Resident Evil things in it, but done REALLY badly"

    Fixed ;)
Seriously I'm amazed they got to four films, the movies are awful! If it's taking inspiration from RE5 *shudders* this one will be the worst mark my words.

+1 for the boulder punching scene

So now the fims will be even less like the games, result :S

I hate Anderson. He ruined both Alien and Predator franchises. I will never see any of his films ever again. The Resi films are awful and has nothing to do with the games.

    so there's gonna be racism?

"Seriously I'm amazed they got to four films, the movies are awful!"

I know this and I agree yet for some strange reason I still love them...
  • kinky_mong #9 2 years ago

The only reason Resi films exist is because Milla Jovovich needs work.
  • BOBBYLUPO #10 2 years ago

I honestly think that PWS Anderson's going to knock this one out of the park. People don't realise it yet but what they really want to see from a Resident Evil film is not a well-assembled genre film with zombies, it's a low-budget 3D remake of The Matrix with superior dog attacks and that bloke from Prison Break.

  • Murton #11 2 years ago

But the big question is Mr Anderson, have you written a proper ending this time or another one of your trademark "please let me make another film Mr Studio Boss Guy, pretty please" so called cliffhanger endings?

I learned from the first two Resi films and the first AvP film that this man is either incapable or unwilling to tie up his screenplays and I'd rather skip the whole film that see what BS he puts in the final ten minutes.
  • TheApologist #12 2 years ago

I know the films are bad films. But, sat around with a few friends and a few beers, and shouting 'drink!' every time a zombie dog appears, these bad films become fun. And I, for one, am looking forward to it.

Bloody lightweight, the zombie dogs don't appear enough to to get drunk.
  • geeza2020 #14 2 years ago

well we all no what to expect by now from this series of films, although im quite shocked that Capcom allow these films to keep being made. They're awful! But then again, so was Resi 5....

  • Gambit1977 #16 2 years ago

I can't stand Anderson, which is weird as event horizon for 2/3s the film was ok...but I kinda enjoyed the third resi film. I feel so dirty saying that!
  • Gearskin #17 2 years ago

How did they get to four films? Because Resident Evil turned a substantial profit and the profit margin has increased with each subsequent sequel

    1 - Worldwide: $102,441,078
    2 - Worldwide: $129,394,835
    3 - Worldwide: $147,717,833

Makes me laugh when people crack down on this guy for "ruining" franchises, or complain that these films are "nothing like the games." He doesn't just pick up a pen, write something and get it made. These things are vetted, Capcom has to approve what he is doing. If Capcom is cool with it...

And he can hardly be accused of destroying Alien/Predator. AvP, the first one, had a reported production budget of around $60 million and went on to gross $172,544,654 at the cinema. According to Wikipedia, that's the highest gross for any film in either franchise.

    And James Cameron liked it!

It spawned a sequel, and now Fox has PREDATORS coming in the Summer, and plans to do an Alien prequel with Ridley Scott.

If anything - Paul Anderson generated interest in these movies! Should be saying thanks.

how is the scene with claire and chris taken shot by shot from re5 when claire doesnt even show up on 5?
  • telboy007 #19 2 years ago

I'll never say a bad word against this man, I liked Solider quite a lot. I liked AvP quite a lot. I liked the Resi films quite a lot. I'll probably like this quite a lot.
  • mashk #20 2 years ago

We all criticise Paul W.S. Anderson. But by god, would I like to BE him. He's living the dream, he gets to SHAG Milla Jovovich and direct films in Hollywood.

    Jammy git.
  • Slipstream #21 2 years ago

    This film should be brilliant!

I will enjoy the scene where the protagonist's 'partner' obliviously runs into danger, and will particularly enjoy the arguments about ammo hording!

*for the record I love Resi Evil 5 >.
  • muscleblade #22 2 years ago

Soldier, Event Horizon and even Mortal Kombat was ok. It went downhill from there.
  • MDL199 #23 2 years ago

I gotta admit I like the Resi movies.
  • space_ace #24 2 years ago

    > every time I go to Japan

    lucky bastard :)
  • Koborover #25 2 years ago

At least Anderson is smart enough not to lift the "shoot Africa's population in half" premise from RE5 as well.
  • JamieR #26 2 years ago

He did death race which is an epic film i recommend to all.

  • firefly #28 2 years ago

    @EarlBassett

Agreed. Anybody who knows even the slightest thing about Japan knows that's Japanese businesman speak for "we don't want to tell you", except they're too polite to just come out and say it straight.
  • Benraiben2k #29 2 years ago

Resi 5 is a game that initially I was a bit let down by, a year on, probably one of my favourite games. Story mode is weak as a single player (like the rest of franchise), but as a co-op adventure with a friend, and the mercenaries mode and DLC paks, I love Resi 5.

[/i]"I thought it kind of reinvented the videogame franchise"[/i]

Um... Resident Evil 4 says hi!

Seriously, this guy is still allowed to be involved in the franchise? Given he seems to be completely ignorant of a fairly major installment of the franchise from which he's making his millions, allied to the fact that thus far his films have mostly done nothing but smear the license in shit, probably suggests that he might not be the best guy to be involved.

Just get on with a spiritual successor to Event Horizon please, and leave Resi alone!
  • SomaticSense #31 2 years ago

@muscleblade: "I hate Anderson. He ruined both Alien and Predator franchises."

He didn't ruin them, no. He completely killed them.

As a result, there is likely to never be another legitimate Alien or Predator film for the foreseeable future, and it's all down to that rubbish that he came up with. It managed that rare thing, making genuine fans completely lose all enthusiasm for both franchises.
  • JamieR #32 2 years ago

    @SomaticSense

The first Alien and Predator was ok i think wasn't great but it was fun.

I think the next film Alien and Predator Requiem was the real killer of the franchises and he wasn't responsible for that one. It made the first Alien and Predator look a lot better. The franchises are a bit over rated in the first place anyways.
  • Futaba #33 2 years ago

The films are awful, you get a much better experience playing the actual games. I doubt this new one will change my feelings either.
  • hahayou #34 2 years ago

"There's a whole fight scene that we're about to shoot that we start next week with Ali Larter and Wentworth Miller which is taken almost - well, is taken shot by shot from Resident Evil 5."

Is that the bit that went:
    "They're all around us!"
    "I'm out!"
    "Here, take my pistol!"
    "..."
"No, I think you have to stand closer. How do I do this again? Is it Y then d-pad or the other way round?"
