APB beta registration opens

Sign up for online cops and robbers.

Realtime Worlds has opened up applications to take part in the beta test of its hotly anticipated crime MMO, APB.

It's no guarantee of access, naturally, and there's still no word on when the beta might start, although Realtime estimated August when we spoke to them at E3 in June.

APB will be a subscription-free action game set in cities of around 100 players, with factions of gangsters and enforcers chasing and shooting each other around the streets, GTA-style. Console versions have been bandied about, but it's only confirmed for PC release in "early 2010" at the moment, published by EA.

Read our E3 preview for more, and watch our for further details on APB emerging from this week's gamescom in Cologne.

Thanks to ChaK for the heads-up about this on Friday.

Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be first-come-first-served, and I don't think answering "because it's free!" when asked why I want to help beta test the game is going to do me any favours.

It was getting to the end of the questionnaire when they asked "How many hours do you have to dedicate to testing?" that I realised I probably wasn't going to be high on the list of candidates.

That said, they should be looking for people from all walks of life so they can get an idea of balance, people who are likely to play it, not just people who will sit at it for hours a day plugging away, so you could still be in with a chance joe.

Well, I've applied but probably won't get in. Just built my PC this weekend to get properly into PC gaming for the first time, and I'd certainly be interested in giving this a whirl.

I don't think answering "because it's free!" when asked why I want to help beta test the game is going to do me any favours.

I answered with "Because my job application with you failed!" Cause I'm sure employees would have got in anyway.

I always like to put something interesting with the potential of being funny in the "why should you be allowed in our beta?" fields. Also, these are just normal amount and type of questions for the traditional beta application.
