Rage system requirements detailed

Free up 25GB of hard disk space.

The PC version of forthcoming id Software shooter Rage demands a hefty 25GB of your machine's hard disk space, publisher Bethesda has revealed.

Other than that, the game's system requirements, as revealed on the Bethesda Blog today, seem fairly manageable.

Here's what you'll need:

Minimum:

  • OS: Win XP SP3, Vista, Win 7
  • Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo or Equivalent AMD
  • Memory: 2GB
  • Hard Disk Space: 25GB
  • Video Card: GeForce 8800, Radeon HD 4200

Recommended:

  • OS: Win XP SP3, Vista, Win 7
  • Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad or Equivalent AMD
  • Memory: 4GB
  • Hard Disk Space: 25GB
  • Video Card: GeForce 9800 GTX, ATI Radeon HD 5550

The console version isn't too far behind - id boss John Carmack revealed last month that the game will be a 21-22GB install on the Xbox 360.

What i want to know is what was the resolution between Sony and ID about how much they can install? Is full install going to be available or are we looking for that partial install and lots of streaming from BR disk, which wont be much fun.
  • The-Jack-Burton #2 9 months ago

I just changed my pre-order from this to Batman. Regardless of all the hype and controversy, it's still just a FPS.

I'm still getting it though, probably wait till the first of the year.

I'm sure if it's blowing everyone's minds with awesome, I will buy it immediately.
  • Xardan #3 9 months ago

There is no way this game will remake the money invested on it. Been 6 years in development hasnt it? Needs to be a major hit, and too much competition around its release for that.
  • Naster #4 9 months ago

I for one welcome the increased HDD space requirements if it means better-looking game assets. HDD space is dirt cheap nowadays anyways.

Will be interesting to see if the environments will be noticeably less repetitive than in most games. Or maybe the size is more due to textures being more detailed than usual.

Glad to see that an 9800 GTX does cut it. Was expecting something in the GTX 2xxx series, glad I was wrong.
Competing with BF3 and MW3 might hurt sales way more than Bethesda are expecting.
  • Softie2k #6 9 months ago

I haven't been overwhelmed by an id game since Quake.

Their graphics are hyped and I have no idea why Carmack is hyped the way he is when there are hundreds of developers doing the same things better.

All this being said, I do hope they pull it off, I just don't think they will.
  • Eraysor #7 9 months ago

And to think I once balked at the colossal 140mb install for Star Wars Episode 1: Racer (which incidentally was a brilliant game). Or the old 11mb install for SimCity 2000 (that was the deluxe installation too!)
  • Malek86 #8 9 months ago

@Eraysor: oh, come on. A 140MB installation in 1999 wasn't much. There was much worse around. For example, Daggerfall's best install was 500MB... back in 1996. I wonder how many people were even able to select it.

Will be interesting to see if PC games are ever sold on BD-ROMs or if publishers just don't think it's worth getting another physical format off the ground at this point.
  • spunkythefunkymunkey #10 9 months ago

Christ, that'll take 3 days to download with my cack internet! Might have to go buy it from a real shop!
  • TheGuvernor #11 9 months ago

    Game of the goddamn decade!
25G's of digital, blood soaked, nirvana!
Really frikin' excited about this & just don't get the negative reaction from so many gamers.
    We're spoiled I guess.

When the fuck was April again?
  • 32768Colours #13 9 months ago

It's odd how I've loved every single id game I've ever played, yet its only since reading the preview in GamesTM that I really started to get excited by this. Daft really, cos its probably going to be brilliant!

More on topic, I'm guessing its install sizes of this magnitude that are partly why folks have been talking about the limitations imposed on the 360 versions of games (and by association PS3 ports). Well, as long as the game kicks all kinds of ass, I suppose people will just buy the best port of the game available to them, so its rather academic.

Such a large install does suggest that the DVD format is getting a little out-dated I suppose, though recalling the days of having to multi-load games on my Spectrum + when the 128k came out puts things into perspective. You young uns have never had it so good!

9800gtx/5550 as Recommended and with beautiful graphics at 60fps, I feel like Doom 3 is releasing again and people don't even have to upgrade for the huge visual jump again cause id is working their black magic.
  • PenguinJim #16 9 months ago

    8800 minimum...

    9800GTX recommended...

Those two are damn near identical, aren't they? In fact, don't most 8800s use the G92, just like the 9800GTX? But even the G80 is only a tiny difference. I wonder if there's a mistake in there. Frankly, I'm surprised that there aren't mistakes in every GPU requirement listing, thanks to the ridiculous naming systems employed by nVidia and ATi/AMD.
  • curryking3 #17 9 months ago

Yep, the 9800 is just about the same as a 8800.

Lucky me, because my desktop has a 9800 GTX. Unlucky me... as I only have my laptop with me... lol. 325M though, so I think I should be OK to play it.

Only have a 100GB partition for Windows and programs... that's gonna be a problem to fit for me haha... gonna have to move a lot of files come October 4 (re: move a bunch of non-Steam games).

"Will be interesting to see if the environments will be noticeably less repetitive than in most games. Or maybe the size is more due to textures being more detailed than usual."

Carmack and id's artists talk a lot about both I think. There's several nice Rage-specific videos where Willits and Carmack and artists talk about the game. One of them is specifically about the engine and how the artists love it and such and such. They say we are getting both. From watching videos I believe them personally.

So whats the install for the PS3 version?
  • siro #19 9 months ago

How is only the rest but the 25GB fairly managable?
My three year old super-cheap notebook has a 300GB hard drive, and for desktops you can get a hard drive with 2TB for 50 quid noawadays, and the HD is the easiest upgrade in a computer.

In 1993, literally only DOS and Strike Commander fit on my 40MB HD - I had to delete Windows to install the game! And my PC was brand new, so they still sold them like that.
  • Ahskay #20 9 months ago

/There is no way this game will remake the money invested on it. Been 6 years in development hasnt it?

//The length of time is not the only factor though, you need to know the number of staff. A team of 40 for 6 years is cheaper than a team of 100 for 3 years.

→ Not only that but it's not the game they have been developing for 6 years but the engine. They will be using this engine for years to come and because of the limitations of the consoles it will be a couple of years till we see this engine perform like it's intended to do. Quite looking forward to this game, all the previews say this game is fun.

  • Timotei #22 9 months ago

This has average written all over it.

Edit: Oh come on, it so does. Post-apocalyptic FPS? haven't had one of those in a while, should be fresh and exciting!

@Xardan: Wrong! id Software always was a pretty small develioper, no more than 40 people worked there. So yearly development costs used to be pretty low, around 2.5 million a year. For the first four years id Software spent around 10 million, then they sold out to Zenimax for $105 million two years ago. From then on all development was funded exclusively by Zenimax and employee numbers skyrocketed to 200. However: Rage was not part of the deal. The first game that Zenimax will profit from is the next Doom. Rage is self-funded and released by EA Partners, meaning almost all income generated by Rage will be pure profit for id Software (the original shareholders). If it sells only 1 million copies that's an income of $30 million and $20 million pure profit going straight to Carmack, Willis, Hollenshead and others. If it sells 3 million (which it will) we are talking about $80 million. It was a genious move to exclude Rage from the sell-out but still letting Zenimax fund Rage development for two years.
  • LHH #24 9 months ago

Cool, easily beat those specs. Can't wait. MP based FPSs can suck it as far as I'm concerned (mainly as I'm shit at them!).

  • StooMonster #25 9 months ago

@Subdominator: thanks for that, that's really interesting.

Personally I've bought every id game ever published and Rage will be no exception, OK over the years it's been a bit hit-n-miss but on the whole a positive experience. I've even enjoyed the recent iOS titles, but I hope the PC version (that's the one I've pre-ordered) has more variety in baddies than I've seen in videos.
  • havoc2011 #26 9 months ago

Yay should be able to run it on high then.
  • Tiiti #27 9 months ago

At what resolution are these specs based on? I'm guessing not my native 2560x1440... :( ?

Makeamazing: What i want to know is what was the resolution between Sony and ID about how much they can install? Is full install going to be available or are we looking for that partial install and lots of streaming from BR disk, which wont be much fun.

Likewise, if the game doesn't support a 25GB install then I have no reason to buy it.

I'm not a fan of Bethesda or whatever contractual obligations they've might have signed up to with Microsoft to produce multi platform parity.

I'm an Idsoftware fan, and if Rage isn't a repeat of Portal 2 (for optimisation on all platforms), then my relationship with Idsoftware products is probably over.

From quakecon it sounds like Carmack and team have it running properly on all three platforms, but my worry is that the PS3 version will be crocked by policies, like I now assume Crysis 2 was, when compared to their siggraph paper.

On the issue of install sizes, since Sony removed the OtherOS feature in firmware, that should have guaranteed freeing up 10GB of the 60GB/40GB original PS3s, and should now mean that 25GB installs at the very least should be possible.

For people with a working original 20GB Japanese SKU that they haven't upgraded the drive, Sony should really just offer those 5 customers replacement hard drives free of charge, so that 25GB installs can become possible.
  • lockload #39 9 months ago

Carmack has since backtracked on the 360 requiring 24GB install or nothing, he was wrong you can just install the disc you are currently on in the story
  • Caimbeul #40 9 months ago

glad to see the system req's are stupidly high. a 9800 or 5550 is pretty low end these days and for that to be a recommended spec... maybe there is some truth to the megatexture having very little performance hit?
  • Darren #41 9 months ago

Ouch! That's a 25 GB 'Steamworks' install too so I'll have no choice of where to install it and my games partition, where Steam is located, has just 51 GB free (it's going to be less after this weeks' W40K: Space Marine install too). I really hate Steam and its lack of custom installs... I've already moved the entire directory to larger hard drives twice in the past two years... :(
  • Spence1115 #42 9 months ago

@Darren backup some unused games to another hard drive and delete them from Games partition? That way, you can just restore them from backup if you need them without issue.
  • arcam #43 9 months ago

    @Darren

I know it's annoying, but if it's that much of a problem, you can use Steam Mover to relocate individual games to other discs. [link url=http://www.traynier.com/software/steammover
    ]http://www.traynier.com/software/steammo...[/link]

Or just buy a new HDD and keep it for Steam.
