GT5: Day one update unlocks online
UPDATE: Unlocked features revealed.
UPDATE: This just in from Eurogamer Reviews Editor Oli Welsh: The patch was 133MB and downloaded and installed in a couple of minutes. When the game booted, it then recommended a further install from disc which took about five minutes.
It unlocks open and private racing lobbies, community features such a meassage board, mail and gifts, Gran Turismo TV (a store for downloading video content - all free at the moment), the Museum (cards/photos about automotive history that can be traded) and a news service on the title screen.
ORIGINAL STORY: You'll only be able to play Polyphony Digital's PlayStation 3 exclusive racer Gran Turismo 5 online if you download a day one update, Eurogamer can reveal.
Sony's confirmed gamers will need to download the 133MB update before they play the game – if they want to take their racing skills online.
The update takes Gran Turismo 5 up to version 1.01, and adds online community features.
Without the update, the game give players an error message when they try to take the sim online.
The update is in addition to GT5's 6.4GB optional hour-long install – you can opt for the game to unpack chunks as you play.
Gran Turismo 5 has 1031 cars, which translates to an overwhelming list that we reproduced in full.
Gran Turismo 5 will be released at midnight.

Very strange.

Exactly - it would be more of a story if a game did NOT launch with a day one patch.

Oh and the museum turns out to be some kind of card trading game, lol, and all rooms, public or private, also generate a unique number that people can use to join it directly without having to browse for the room with regular searches. This is something in addition to being able to set up private rooms, invite people, etc.

Time to lay off them drugs then, eh? There are no "financial reasons" valid enough to sell your PS3. Especially when GT5 is out.

Its a day one update. Its not day 1 yet.

Just a guess, but maybe because some people get the game early and whatnot, the patch, which it's easier to control when it comes out, ensures people can only get online after everything's ready and working?

Oh FFS. Negged for asking a question. Sorry, but my days of trusting publishers are long over. I've already got the game, but I'm not near the PS3, hence the question/cynicism.
EDIT 2: Looks like there's no check. The game insists on installing the patch first before letting you play, but you don't have to be logged in. Also, for those of us looking to do the full 50 min 8GB install (yes, that's what it says in the settings), the option's buried away under the system settings. The game does the gradual install by default.

It plays fine as long as you don't connect
as soon as I do it stops working
fuk sake Sony surely you can't be as petty to ristrict it until the 24th
as for the game it's like being back in 1995 same tracks, same cars
5 years in the making Woohoo
Oh I like the Karting though!!

no it's compiled with 3.50 sdk, so I gues pirates wont get their dirty hands on this game any time soon.

Yeah, because if there's one thing that really pisses me off, it's having to actually use the hardware I've purchased. :/

but this is screen tear city on this game.the menu is nice.good layout.no and repeat no crash/bumping car damage what so ever.maybe u need to put i in another mode.
what have they been doing for 5 years????.
sorry sony but no way is this better than forza 3.it beats u up hands down im afraid.cars look good but cars in forza look better and theres more on the side of upgrading your car too.tracks are ok.forza tracks look nicer /crispy no screen tear aswell.and the game runs at 1080p.havent got a 3dtv so carnt comment on that.ill take it the frame rate will take a big wallop though.
sorry but forza 3 rules the roost..

If this is going to be like the gt 5 online community with shit like that, its going to suck. deal with it, has anyone never got a game delivered early before??

Your just a little shit with an Xbox 360 trying to troll.

I, on the other hand own the game and yes, there is crash damage. It is realistic crash damage. Not the kind you find in Burnout games which is exagerrated for eye candy. You must be blind if you think Forza 3 is a better looking racing game. Utterly stupid comment to make. Get some glasses. Screen tear/ Again, get some glasses. Maybe ones that don't have cracks in them this time though.
Your a silly, insecure fanboy and the fact that you went to so much trouble to pretend you own the game on a system you don't own, just shows how insecure you are. Grow up.

why bad mouth people, this is my view of a game that took so long to come out and the hype behind it.the factors that i have said are true for me.not everyone else.i own over 50 games for ps3.pointless looking at my profile i havent even updated it for probably a year u moron.im no fan boy either.i like games what ever system it may be on.im lucky that i can have best of a lot of worlds but i dont gloat about it.yes i have an xbox360 plus over 100 games.i also have a ps1 ps2 again probably 300 games for those 2.have a dreamcast gamecube, xbox original.so what i can afford to a lot of peps carnt.but i dont gloat about it.ive had gt5 since yesterday got it from shopto.net.which i have proof.psn gjames just incase ud like to check....
