GT5: Day one update unlocks online

UPDATE: Unlocked features revealed.

UPDATE: This just in from Eurogamer Reviews Editor Oli Welsh: The patch was 133MB and downloaded and installed in a couple of minutes. When the game booted, it then recommended a further install from disc which took about five minutes.

It unlocks open and private racing lobbies, community features such a meassage board, mail and gifts, Gran Turismo TV (a store for downloading video content - all free at the moment), the Museum (cards/photos about automotive history that can be traded) and a news service on the title screen.

ORIGINAL STORY: You'll only be able to play Polyphony Digital's PlayStation 3 exclusive racer Gran Turismo 5 online if you download a day one update, Eurogamer can reveal.

Sony's confirmed gamers will need to download the 133MB update before they play the game – if they want to take their racing skills online.

The update takes Gran Turismo 5 up to version 1.01, and adds online community features.

Without the update, the game give players an error message when they try to take the sim online.

The update is in addition to GT5's 6.4GB optional hour-long install – you can opt for the game to unpack chunks as you play.

Gran Turismo 5 has 1031 cars, which translates to an overwhelming list that we reproduced in full.

Gran Turismo 5 will be released at midnight.

  • the_dudefather #3 2 years ago

So...like any patch for a console game featuring multiplayer then?

What's the point in this and why does there have to be an update to access multiplayer?

    Very strange.
  • Beano #5 2 years ago

"So...like any patch for a console game featuring multiplayer then?"

Exactly - it would be more of a story if a game did NOT launch with a day one patch.

Lots of impressions on GAF confirm voice chat during racing (you can also pre-set some of the quality settings for it, like 'low' or 'very high'), spectator mode and such. Me likey - my dream of being able to do a longer race with fuel and tire wear in play with my old gran turismo friends with all assists off etc.

Oh and the museum turns out to be some kind of card trading game, lol, and all rooms, public or private, also generate a unique number that people can use to join it directly without having to browse for the room with regular searches. This is something in addition to being able to set up private rooms, invite people, etc.

Chances are it has something to do with the jailbreaking of the PS3?
  • Lucodeath #8 2 years ago

  • Collymilad #9 2 years ago

Argh i had to sell my ps3 for financial reasons 2 weeks ago.

  • DoctorFouad #10 2 years ago

the biggest (also best ?) racing game ever created will be finally in the hands of millions of gamers arounl the world !
  • Lucodeath #11 2 years ago

Im joking ps3 is alive, however the install has said approx 14 mins left for the last 15 mins which seems for ever. If only I got up earlier.
  • Flabio #12 2 years ago

Pretty much par for the course now, weird how many games have to patch in their MP component these days...
  • levitate #13 2 years ago

    @collymilad:

Time to lay off them drugs then, eh? There are no "financial reasons" valid enough to sell your PS3. Especially when GT5 is out.

  • Lucodeath #16 2 years ago

This patch is out now, I should know cos Im installing the game right now. 5 mins left approx
  • dominalien #17 2 years ago

"Pretty much par for the course now, weird how many games have to patch in their MP component these days... "

Just a guess, but maybe because some people get the game early and whatnot, the patch, which it's easier to control when it comes out, ensures people can only get online after everything's ready and working?
  • Ryze #18 2 years ago

It keeps the pirates off the online modes, which is a blessing. More games should do this.
  • sfp_noodle #19 2 years ago

Well to be fair, if you didn't have the internet, you wouldn't be missing anything lol. I remember Tekken 6 also made you download the online mode on PS3. Seems a bit bizzare but I assume its to further make their game copy proof.
  • coolbritannia #20 2 years ago

So, 5 years and yet not quite finished at retail?
  • Darren #21 2 years ago

So despite the fact that the game was constantly delayed for improvements, tweaks and refinements it was still released unfinished?!?!?!? :o
  • Zimo #22 2 years ago

Sometimes the simplest answer is the best..
They have developed the online system having already moved the game to disc, gets the game out before xmas and they dont have an additional rush to get it running.
  • Lucodeath #23 2 years ago

40 seconds left, its been on that for 5 mins. This is torture
  • KayJay #24 2 years ago

    @Darren
It's clearly an method of stopping pirates.
  • Lucodeath #25 2 years ago

Now stuck on 3 seconds, Well it did say 20 mins when first started, so 1 hour may be right.

In fairness most online games have day one patches. Tbh it's actually a reassuring thing, the only ppl that will require the patch have Internet connections, compare that to fallout.........
  • TrevSkyline #33 2 years ago

We have waited YEARS for this - an extra hour or two with downloads just adds to the excitement! :-)

I think I might just be drooling when I'm watching the download bar slowley crawl up....lol.

No updates for a few minutes now.....having trouble getting the first license?
  • TopKatt #35 2 years ago

    When's the review due?
  • KayJay #36 2 years ago

    Tomorrow morning.
  • Lucodeath #37 2 years ago

Went straight to arcade mode, got work in an hour. cant find multi player though
  • Zephro #38 2 years ago

Nothing to do with piracy. If a game ships without multiplayer it simply wasn't finished in time.
  • uknortherner2000 #39 2 years ago

What's the betting that the online component only unlocks for new purchases, not preowned?

Oh FFS. Negged for asking a question. Sorry, but my days of trusting publishers are long over. I've already got the game, but I'm not near the PS3, hence the question/cynicism.

EDIT 2: Looks like there's no check. The game insists on installing the patch first before letting you play, but you don't have to be logged in. Also, for those of us looking to do the full 50 min 8GB install (yes, that's what it says in the settings), the option's buried away under the system settings. The game does the gradual install by default.

  • spiritsnake #45 2 years ago

i think the patch is to further strengthen the security for the game so pirates cant succeed, so far they are still crying to make the game play.
  • orangpelupa #46 2 years ago

i heard GT5 still compiled with SDK 3.30.
  • Jay-ITFC #47 2 years ago

If EG only just knows this today how on eath can the game be played enough for review in under 24 hours?
  • bigtechno #48 2 years ago

well i haver got it downloaded the update, install to HDD and it won't work when you are on PS3 network?
It plays fine as long as you don't connect
as soon as I do it stops working
fuk sake Sony surely you can't be as petty to ristrict it until the 24th

as for the game it's like being back in 1995 same tracks, same cars
5 years in the making Woohoo
Oh I like the Karting though!!
  • szar400 #49 2 years ago

GT5 doesnt work properly server error keeps cutting in
  • albinas #50 2 years ago

    @orangpelupa

no it's compiled with 3.50 sdk, so I gues pirates wont get their dirty hands on this game any time soon.

  • th3duckst3r #57 2 years ago

currently playing single player.to get a feel.
but this is screen tear city on this game.the menu is nice.good layout.no and repeat no crash/bumping car damage what so ever.maybe u need to put i in another mode.
what have they been doing for 5 years????.
sorry sony but no way is this better than forza 3.it beats u up hands down im afraid.cars look good but cars in forza look better and theres more on the side of upgrading your car too.tracks are ok.forza tracks look nicer /crispy no screen tear aswell.and the game runs at 1080p.havent got a 3dtv so carnt comment on that.ill take it the frame rate will take a big wallop though.

sorry but forza 3 rules the roost..

I, on the other hand own the game and yes, there is crash damage. It is realistic crash damage. Not the kind you find in Burnout games which is exagerrated for eye candy. You must be blind if you think Forza 3 is a better looking racing game. Utterly stupid comment to make. Get some glasses. Screen tear/ Again, get some glasses. Maybe ones that don't have cracks in them this time though.

Your a silly, insecure fanboy and the fact that you went to so much trouble to pretend you own the game on a system you don't own, just shows how insecure you are. Grow up.

why bad mouth people, this is my view of a game that took so long to come out and the hype behind it.the factors that i have said are true for me.not everyone else.i own over 50 games for ps3.pointless looking at my profile i havent even updated it for probably a year u moron.im no fan boy either.i like games what ever system it may be on.im lucky that i can have best of a lot of worlds but i dont gloat about it.yes i have an xbox360 plus over 100 games.i also have a ps1 ps2 again probably 300 games for those 2.have a dreamcast gamecube, xbox original.so what i can afford to a lot of peps carnt.but i dont gloat about it.ive had gt5 since yesterday got it from shopto.net.which i have proof.psn gjames just incase ud like to check....

i have no need to lie dude.like said had it since yesterday.its good dont get me wrong.just too much hype and i still think forza 3 is better graphically.and gt5 has screen tear.even on replays.ive no need to update my profile of games that i have pointless,u just get called a liar and especially a little shit.hardly given im way over 30.
  • Lucodeath #64 2 years ago

Im way over 30, run my own company an all that. Im a big kid whos a games junkie though. Its equally as good as forza3 at the mo, it may be better but i dont know yet. The handling is spot on but i was expecting more after so many years. Not noticed any screen tear or drop on fps.
