How much money did MOH make?

Nowhere near as much as COD or Reach.

Did EA's Medal of Honor make more money at launch than Activision's last Call of Duty game, Modern Warfare 2? In a word, no. More than Halo: Reach? No.

EA boss John Riccitiello told Fox News (via IndustryGamers) that his new war game made $100 million during its opening week. That should be close to recouping development costs.

We already knew that the game had shifted a not-to-be-sniffed-at 1.5 million copies in five days.

Activision's record breaking Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 made $310 million from UK and US sales in just 24 hours.

Halo: Reach became Microsoft's biggest ever release this September, and generated $200 million from one platform in one day.

Scores trended slightly lower than expected (although Eurogamer awarded a handsome 8/10) and forced EA to issue a public defence of the game and MOH series.

"This is a marathon not a sprint - today's Medal of Honor launch represents a step forward in that race," EA said, praising the first attempt at its MOH revival.

Medal of Honor was released last Friday and raced to the top of the UK all-formats chart. Whether the Danger Close Games and DICE-developed game can hold on for a second week we'll have to wait and see - Eurogamer deputy editor Ellie Gibson doesn't think it will.

Wondering which platform to buy Medal of Honor on? Eurogamer's Digital Foundry blog faced them off against each other and declared a winner.

Eurogamer plays the first 15 minutes of Medal of Honor.

Hows the campaign of MoH those of you who have it?
  • Dave52 #2 2 years ago

The campaign is excellent. One or two spots where I wasn't sure what to do, and my AI companions didn't offer any clues, but it is solid. Some tense moments, plenty of sneaking etc.

Really good game, and the MP is also very good so far.

EDIT: Get it on the PS3 you also get MOH Frontline which looks pretty sweet since they've added HD, and it always was a good game.

Soooooooo painful to watch someone that aint good at FPS games!!!! GRRRRRR!!!! I spent most of the time watching that shouting 'Flank them you twat!' and 'use the fuckin sights!' Jesus! Looks good online, though. Shame they didn't get rid of snipers. I know no ones ever going to, but I'd love an option of not allowing them in certain games.

Microsoft are the masters of massive marketing and getting people to believe the hype. Im not saying CODMW2, Reach or MOH are better/worse than each other (I own none of them), just that when it comes to selling, Microsoft seem to push a product down our throats until we have no choice but to buy. Shows theres a lot of sheep out there (looks across the Atlantic . . . )

Some of this will also be down to a combined factor of cost in a tight economic environement, the already saturated FPS market and the impending release of Treyarchs new COD.

Yep MOH campaign is great, verging on the more realistic side than the arcadey COD. I also like the duck and peek system they have that lets you hold the small shoulder button down and move the left stick to peek in and out of cover - similar to the system found in MOH Airborne. Dice should have put this into the multiplayer side of things, I know its a different engine but surely it wouldn't have been that hard?
  • t8yman #6 2 years ago

The campaign is awful, truly awful. On rails, the cheesiest voice acting, incredibly dim AI, and AI team mates who sometimes wont push forward to trigger the next "event".

Its a real mess, and in no way deserving of the review scores it got. I seem to recall a lot of "didnt read like an 8" comments, and it really isnt an 8.

Traded mine yesterday at Gamestation using the CEX pricematch for £30, otherwise they were offering £18.50. I see tesco are shifting it for £28 now. so expect the trade in value to plummet.
  • beastmaster #7 2 years ago

It's probably a good job that they got this one out first as it would be squished by COD.
  • carlitoswagon #8 2 years ago

The IGN review put me right off. Very scathing. Usually like to experience things for myself but too many negs to pay full price.

Will get MOH but after its down to bargain price on Amazon. BC Vietnam worth waiting for, I hope.
  • asphaltcowboy #9 2 years ago

Pretty good numbers considering MoH has been out of the limelight for so long!
  • t8yman #10 2 years ago

    @carlitos

I hadnt read the IGN review prior to you mentioning it, and it absolutely nails the game down. Its years behind where it should be. Whack a mole, and shooting gallery are particularly accurate (and damning) phrases.

How anyone can say its great is beyond me, its far from great.
  • Spekingur #11 2 years ago

    @t8yman: So basically like MW & MW2 then? :p

MP is the only thing I have tried of the game. I enjoyed it, at least at the time I played it. The guns felt right.
  • Fur1ousApollo #12 2 years ago

feistycheese personally I thought Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 was pushed down our throats more than Halo Reach was.

Interesting that you say "Microsoft seem to push a product down our throats until we have no choice but to buy" and then still didn't buy Reach. Your own point well and truly stamped out :)

I didn't enjoy MW2, I love Halo Reach and its multiplayer and MOH's campaign was mostly ok with the odd great level or section but overall far too short. When I hit the ending of MOH I got the achievement for game complete and my immediate thought was 'really'?

Reach is superb IMHO, the SP kept me hooked for almost 30 hours (seeing as I had to do legendary 1.5 times to unlock the cheevo due to a f'd up save) and the MP is sublime once you get to grips with it.

The fact that a short burst doesnt take down any enemy at all on Halo (as it does on every single mainstream fps) sets it apart for me. The variety between the enemies, and the downright brutality of some of them, particularly on ledge - is amazing. You really do need to plan your path, and the enemy know exactly what you are doing most of the time too. To go from that to MOH really illustrates the gulf between MOH and Reach.

Heres hoping Vanquish is as good as the reviews make out.
  • chrisola #14 2 years ago

Surely a short burst is enough to take down a human soldier? Would you rather have people take 4 clips to down in COD?

Halo is you fighting big tough aliens so of course they are harder to kill :p

Not picked up Reach yet -- do the guns all still go 'pew pew pew pew' and run out of ammo really quickly?

    @rojjer

console gamer thinking "lean" is something new right?
  • PoundHound #16 2 years ago

    My 2 cents:

MOH campaign is ok. Reasonable fun, but no really exciting or memorable moments. Hard is too easy also.

Online is a mess. Small narrow maps make it a snipers/spawn-campers paradise. I found myself (together with 7 or 8 teammates) stuck in a neverending loop of spawn/spawn zone mortar attack death/spawn/spawn zone mortar attack death. Not fun.

If, like me, you buy a lot of games, you'll get something out of the game. However, if you're more discerning, I'd advise advoiding this.

MoH multiplayer isn't balanced for lean.
  • Quixz #18 2 years ago

I really enjoyed the singleplayer a lot. The multiplayer on the other hand I find it to be very difficult if youre not camping/sniping. The snipers are one shot kill and i find the maps have too many flank positions.

For someone who defended this game I'm a little disappointed with the multiplayer.

I might have to buy black ops.. i feel dirty :S

So enough dough made for a sequel with an even shorter campaign mode.

    Job done, then.
  • ghiest #20 2 years ago

@vin They have 3 crap "DLC" add-ons to make which actually add nothing but new game modes and/or a map or two for multi player. Then they will release another.
