Story-driven BioShock 2 DLC announced

Out this autumn.

2K Games has announced Minerva's Den, a single-player story-driven downloadable add-on for shooter BioShock 2.

BioShock 2's final instalment of DLC introduces new characters, locations and enemies to the underwater city Rapture, and will be released "later this fall" for the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. That's this autumn, to you and me.

"Minerva's Den is a self-contained narrative experience that puts players in the role of an all-new character who has teamed up with Brigid Tenenbaum to unravel a dictator's stranglehold on a key district in the distinctive city under the sea," says the official blurb.

2K president Christoph Hartmann had this to say: "Minerva's Den is a substantial addition that will give players more of what they're looking for: more story, more narrative, more gameplay and more of Rapture.

"The core team has created an exciting product that further enhances the mystery and allure of the world of Rapture. Minerva's Den will be a fitting conclusion to the BioShock 2 saga."

So, where will Minerva's Den take us? To a never before seen district of Rapture, that's where.

You'll "uncover the dark secrets hidden in its founder's past. Wield new high-tech weaponry and a devastating new Plasmid to best the towering threats in Minerva's Den: more dangerous Splicers that command the power of the elements, upgraded Security Bots that throw rockets and lightning bolts, and even a never-before-seen type of Big Daddy".

2K released single-player add-on the Protector Trials, which Christian Donlan reviewed for Eurogamer, two days ago.

We reviewed BioShock 2 in February, and gave it 8/10.

I am bit surprised they keep peddling out DLC for Bioshock 2. I honestly thought that there was no one buying BS2 crappy DLC so whats giving them the encouragement to keep doing it?

Glad I haven't played this yet - now I can play it when this DLC comes out and play the full game rather than just part of it.

Just how big is Rapture and how many types of baddies and maniacal dictator types does it contain?
Time to give it a rest or bring it on the mainland.

@matrim83: Well to be fair, so far none of the DLC packs had single player content and I think more people do warm up for SP content than MP content, although I do think they should've released an SP addon pack way sooner.

Not sure I'll download this. I was hoping it would tie deeper into the BioShock 2 storyline, kind of like they did with Opposing Force on the original Half-Life. In OpFor you actually saw Gordon Freeman jump into the teleporter just like you did in Half-Life yourself. So basically, you're re-experiencing an event in HL itself from a different perspective, which I think is cool. They should've done something like this for BioShock 2.

The non-narrative stuff for Bioshock can continue to bugger RIGHT off as that's what I like about these games (yes, even B2 to an extent). I'll be keeping an eye on this as the first DLC for the game for me to potentially purchase.

    Yes please, this is better.

@ andywilkie35, it's a totally different story. Not a part of it. BS2 is already a full game.

Shame it's getting released so long after Bioshock 2's release. I've nowi got rid of it. I love the whole atmosphere, but would have held on to it if i knew there'd be some story-related shenanigans. This should have been released first to my mind.

Oo, its a purchase for me. I wish more DLC was based around extending the single player experience, rather than the formulaic approach of adding MP "maps" and weapons and the like.

I fucking hate pretty much all DLC.
  • Xardan #12 2 years ago

God, how much DLC have they released for this game now? ALOT. And none of it value for money.
  • kangarootoo #13 2 years ago

If the price is right, I'll be interested in this (assuming its not rubbish - please don't be rubbish).

It's not expanding on anything. It's standard tacked on landmass with standard upgraded enemies.

It's about as expansive and innovative as putting sugar on cornflakes.

Good. Now relevant content is distribtuted digitally only. Who needs a sequel - or even a complete original game - when there's DLC. Plus, it makes content not only fractured but more expensive. Kudos. You really should embrace/buy this.

Still not the wander around Rapture in it's glory days DLC, that I still hope for.

But still better than no SP DLC.
  • metalangel #17 2 years ago

Wow, yet more crap retconned into the original story. These guys have zero artistic integrity.

Have you moaners actually played this DLC then or are you just being irrational?

New characters, new gameworld, new gameplay elements, expanded story. What's wrong with that?

Yes the DLC up until now has been pretty lackluster but I can't see any reason to write this off already.

I'm more annoyed that it took so long.

Oh, and that it'll inevitably be late on the PC. Sigh.

"Minerva's Den will be a fitting conclusion to the BioShock 2 saga"

Oh, that's it then? No more DLC?

I cant bloody believe you people are defending DLC like this. Shame on you.
  • sjmlondon #22 2 years ago

I wonder if this is already on the disc like some of the other shameless DLC for this game.
