X360 Spring Update due soon

But not today.

Xbox Live's director of programming has said not to expect the Xbox 360 spring dashboard update introducing Live Messenger support early this week after all.

"The update is not being released in the next 24 hours," Larry Hryb, aka Major Nelson, wrote on his blog in the early hours of this morning.

He went on to point out that the original "Spring Update" press release identified "the week of May 7th" rather than the 7th specifically, adding that "we're well within that so far". Don't worry - it sounds like he'll keep us briefed about what day it is (as we understand it, today is Tuesday).

Quite when we'll see the Spring Update is unknown, then, but it's probably worth adding that it had been expected to pre-empt the launch of Halo 2 for Windows Vista and "Games for Windows - LIVE" on 8th May, but that Halo 2 has now seemingly slipped. (Its UK release is now set for 25th May, with a 22nd May launch expected in the US.)

For more on the Spring Update, check in with our previous run-down of features. Headliners are Live Messenger, support for a forthcoming "Xbox 360 Text Input Device", and better media playback options.
