Wii stock withheld - GameStop

Nintendo keeps quiet.

Dan DeMatteo, COO of US retailer GameStop, reckons that Nintendo withheld stock of the Wii to boost performance in Q1 2007.

"This is just my opinion - I think they intentionally dried up supply because they made their numbers for the year," DeMatteo told investors in a conference call. "Their new year starts April 1 and I think we're going to see supply flowing."

Nintendo UK said it could not comment on events in the US, but said it continued to make regular shipments of Wii to retailers across the UK "and have been since launch".

"Demand remains incredibly high for Wii with some retailers reporting higher interest now than at launch," a spokesperson told Eurogamer.

Naturally DeMatteo was speaking off the back of some exciting sales growth Q1 financial blah blah etc. and so on, and if you're the sort of person who wants to read about that, then you might want to look in on the GamesIndustry.biz story reporting GameStop's US$ 5 billion in sales.
