United Front Games lays off staff

True Crime dev still "open for business".

United Front Games, the Canadian studio behind the recently canned True Crime: Hong Kong, has confirmed a number of redundancies.

However, according to a statement released to Joystiq, it has not closed and intends to continue developing "top games".

"Due to the fact that True Crime is no longer in production, a number of roles have been made redundant which unfortunately has led to a reduction in staff," read the statement. "UFG is still very much open for business and we will continue to ship top games."

As to what those games might be, nothing has been announced just yet. A message recently posted on its website regarding the demise of True Crime gave little away.

"We are sorry we did not get a chance to complete this project with Activision, but we understand why. We are both committed to doing quality games and nothing less. Maybe we will have a chance to work together in the future, but in the meantime we are setting our creative sights on a different horizon."

Activision pulled the plug on True Crime: Hong Kong last month, explaining "In an industry where only the best games in each category are flourishing, to be blunt, it just wasn't going to be good enough."

Prior to the True Crime snafu, United Front's only shipped title was ModNation Racers for PlayStation 3 and PSP, which won a solid 7/10 from Eurogamer last May.
