UK Charts: FIFA Street fends off Doom

Doom III heads into the Xbox fastest seller charts, but it's not enough to unseat EA's latest.

Electronic Arts' FIFA Street has stayed in the number one spot for a third week, fending off strong challenges from Ubisoft's Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, which rose one place to number two, and Activision's Xbox edition of Doom III.

Only 3,000 unit sales separated the first and third places, as Chaos Theory saw a rise in sales that edged it closer to toppling FIFA Street, while Doom III became the second fastest selling Xbox game ever after Halo 2.

Doom III also accounted for the only other new entry in the top 40 ranking, with the Resurrection of Evil expansion pack on the PC dropping in at number 27 in the chart.

Further down the top ten, Sony's Gran Turismo 4 and Ubisoft's Brothers In Arms continue to sell strongly, each down just one place to numbers four and five respectively, while Super Mario 64 DS and The Incredibles re-enter the top ten at numbers eight and nine.

On the way out, however, are Capcom's Devil May Cry 3, which drops seven places to number 13, and EA's Rugby 2005, down six places to this week's number 14.

The missing in action list this week features two games which really deserved better, namely Digital Jesters' TrackMania Sunrise and Vivendi Universal's SWAT 4, both of which have received a good critical response but, sadly, not one that's been matched by sales.

This Friday is a relatively quiet one for retail here in the UK, perhaps giving the market a chance to digest the slew of big-name games we've seen in the past few weeks. Rockstar's Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition is the biggest game of the week, although how interested the Gran Turismo sated UK will be is a good question. Also appearing are Namco's Tekken spin-off, Death By Degrees, published here by SCEE, Sega's The Matrix Online, and Digital Jesters' Freedom Force Vs. The Third Reich.
